This tute will result in a top aprox 44.5" x 75.5" before borders.

You are going to need to use Bubble Jet or a similar product to pre-treat your colored squares before printing them.

Materials:
Cut 5" squares of the following:

6 Orange
6 Light Blue
40 Dark Blue
28 Medium Blue
7 Green (A)
7 Green (B)
6 Yellow
7 Red
62 Background Color
Current Periodic table http://ptable.com/

On a plain piece of printer paper:
Mark a 2" margin on the left and a 2" margin on the top. Using a tape of your choice (or even water-soluble glue) attach your square to the paper, be sure to line it up with the markings and becareful not to tape where it will be printed.

Using Word or a similar program set the following margins: Top: 2", Left: 2", Right: 1.5", Bottom: 4".

At this point play around with fonts and sizes until you make your block look the way you want.
Tip: Print on plain paper first, hold it to the light and see if it lines up with your square the way you want it to.

Print all of your element squares.
Alkali Metals – Orange
Alkaline Earth Metals – Light Blue
Transition Metals – Medium Blue
Post-transition Metals – Purple
Metalloids – Green (A)
Other Nonmetals – Green (B)
Halogens – Yellow
Noble Gases - Red
Lanthanoids/Actinoids – Medium Blue

Using the periodic table diagram, arrange your colored squares and background squares.

Background squares should be the following in vertical strips:
3 below Alkali Metals (Fr)
1 above Alkaline Earth Metals (Be)
3 below Alkaline Earth Metals (Ra)
3 above Transition Metals
1 below Transition metals
1 above Post-transition metals/Metalloids/Other Nonmetals, Halogens and Noble Gases
1 below Post-transition metals/Metalloids/Other Nonmetals
3 below Halogens (Uus)
3 below Noble gases (Uuo)

Sew together in strips vertically then sew the strips together. Add a border (I'm going to use the same color as my background), back and quilt.

Optional: Change the bottom right background square with a square printed with your label.

Printed Square - you can see the drawn margins

This is great! I saw a periodic table quilt before I became a quilter, so more than 10 years ago, and have had some thoughts about doing one. Thank you for the tutorial.

I have a niece that is a senior in college and is going to be a chemist. I wish I had sent her off to college with a quilt like that. How very VERY cool.

So cute. What a cute quilt that would be for a Science major or Chemistry teacher.
