So glad to come across this tutorial. I have one of the chickens Doreen Speckman made - autographed no less. Thank you for giving her credit for first making these chickens. I think her daughter sold the pattern for a while after Doreen passed. She (Doreen) would have the biggest laugh at the "funky" chickens showing up everywhere! Can't wait to dig into my selvage stash and make up a couple of these.

Thank you for sharing this tute!! I have a book by Sharlene Jorgenson that gives instructions to make these but I like your picture tutorial better!! It's much easier to understand how to go about it by looking at the photos rather than drawn illustrations.
In Dec of 2000 a friend gave me a tiny one that had been made into a Christmas ornament. It was made with a narrow long cabin pattern, but I have been making crumb quilt squares and now I want to try one of these with crumbs. I really like how your selvage chicken looks!! I just measured the square that was used, for the Christmas ornament and it is 2 inches (finished size). |
