Single Star Quilt
2 Attachment(s)
Here are instructions to make a quilt with a single large star. The Star finishes at 48". Borders can be added to enlarge. The photo shows a quilt with 4" borders.
There are 2 star colors and one background. For a 48" star ONLY (no border or backing, but there will be enough for a scrappy binding): 1 1/8 yard background 3/4 yard star color A 3/4 yard star color B From the background fabric, cut 4 13.5" squares and 4 12.5" squares From both the main star colors, cut 4 13.5" squares Make 6 pairs using the 13.5" squares as follows: 2 Sets one A and one B square 2 sets one A and one Background square 2 sets one B and one Background square Make the HSTs: Take 2 13.5" squares and place them right sides together. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner. Sew a seam on each side of the line, 1/4" from the line. Cut on the line Press Cut the resultant HSTs down to 12.5" Assemble the HSTs and squares using this picture as a guide: HST note: you usually add only 7/8" to the finished size to cut the starting squares, which would be 12 7/8". Because of the large size, I had problems, so I cut them larger, 13.5". Background Yardage note: If you only have 1 yard of background fabric, you could cut the squares from all the fabrics at 11" and 12" (rather than 12.5" & 13.5"). Use the 12" squares for the HSTs, recutting them to 11" The squares will finish at 10.5", which would make the whole star 42" rather than 48". |

I was just looking for a nice big star to use in the center of a quilt. I could have gotten it eventually, but now I don't have to do the math! Your colors are very pretty!
|
Love the star and your colors are pretty. Thanks for the tutorial. I have save this for future use.

Thanks for sharing the big star tutorial.
|
Thanks for the tutorial, directions are great.
|
Thank you for going to all the trouble to write up the pattern and put in the pictures. It takes time to go to all that trouble. You are so nice to share with all of us!!
|
This is one design I have used several times. It's generally a hit for my foster kids' quilts. I also do other "big block quilts', such as friendship stars. It's also great for wheel chair quilts. There are a number of blocks that lend themselves to this sort of single block quilt, for example, Dutchman's puzzle. I have used it with novelty fabrics for kids and 'grown up' fabrics for bigger folks.

Thank You so much for a wonderful Tutorial and sharing some ideas, your Star looks so great. The most love pattern.
|
I just got my top done of this star. What quilting design would work for this? I am using my DSM. I don't want the center of the star to be mashed down.
|
Nice job! Jenny of MSQC has a Big Star Tutorial, not this big, but a nice size, I am going to try it soon. I've bought my fabrics!

Here is my version of the big star quilt.
http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...y-t182713.html It was an easy one to make too. Why I didn't think to make this a couple of weeks ago. I just had "take5 quilt" stuck in my head and made 3 of them...lol |
I watched Jenny make this. She has a great video. I made one with Christmas fabric first time and it turned out so pretty. Experimenting with different sizes and colors. Love the star pattern.
|

Love the star quilt. I use a pattern like that from Country Threads that I have made multiple times from flannel. Goes together fast and looks great.

That is exactly what I thought when I saw this top - I am just recently beginning to quilt and just want to do the small lapquilts (wheel chair) for nursing home donations - so I will give this a try. Thanks for the tutorial and thanks MadQuilter for the inspiration!
