Square in Square without math.

I told works4me that I'd do picts of this method. Here they are.
I was playing with these leftover pieces last fall when I should have been workin' on my DGSons's Solar System quilt. :) When DDIL gits pregnant again I'll use these blocks & the other scraps ta make a quilt for that child.
These are just picts of the pieces so you can see how they go tagether.
The first 3 picts are of blocks already made.

Here is my center piece.

Cut 2 squares the same size as the center then cut 'em on the diagonal.

Find the center of the center piece & of the triangle & line 'em up.

Here the 4 triangles are laid by the center piece. As you can see, even discounting the seam allowance, they will be too big. You will need ta trim down.

Thanks for posting... looks like a great method to prevent the triangles from being too small, which happens to me toooooo often!

so, I am guessing as the SIS grows you just keep making the 2 squares for the next row of triangles the same size and then just cut on one diagonal........

I've tried this b4, but wound up with lopsided squares. DUH, the key as you showed so well is squaring each one!

Assemble it fully, then do your squaring up ... be sure to leave the 1/4" allowance where your centre square meets the edge of the new square.

Yes! After ya trim the block up, ya cut the next 2 squares the same size as the new center. Then cut those on the diagonal.

As QuiltE said be sure ta leave the 1/4" seam allowance when ya trim it up.
