ok, so i promised to show you how this is done. so, i will try to do this correctly so you get pics with the instructions. then a couple more layouts...
first you need:
(1) 61/2" square paper backed fusable (i used heat n bond lite)
(1) 6 1/2" square design fabric (mine/hot pink)
(2) 6 1/2" squares background fabric (mine/black)

next, trace your pattern on the paper side of the paperback fusable.
iron to wrong side of your design fabric
cut out your design on the lines
remove paper and arrange on your black squares...yup, you get (2) 6 1/2" squares for each (1) traced :)
see how simple that was?
this technique can be used for lots of different designs...have fun with it i sure have

quiltingnonie 06-14-2010 05:32 AM

Stunning! Now do you have to applique around the edges of the fused pieces?

ckcowl 06-14-2010 05:38 AM

yes, you should stitch down the appliques any way you prefer. i am going to 'quilt'them down...stitch them and quilt it at the same time...if i ever decide on a layout.

sharon b 06-14-2010 05:42 AM

Hi there, sorry for this, but I seem to be having a senior moment here. I love that pattern and having read all your instructions it makes sense and I'm going to have a go, but can you tell me how do you put the blocks together? Are they sewn together or are they fused onto a backing fabric?

ToucanSam 06-16-2010 03:35 AM

Thanks for posting!!!!

Sewlmatesister 06-16-2010 03:53 AM

i'm not exactly sure what you are asking...i've been laying the blocks out side by side to figure out a layout. when i finally decide on the layout i will simply sew the blocks together, the usual way you sew blocks together.
the fused part is the design fused onto the black 6 1/2" squares...i'm posting some blocks from a different project using same technique.
i recommend drawing your own designs. but if you want to use that one it is in McCalls Quilting Jan/Feb 2010

so sunglasses may be in order

btiny36 06-16-2010 07:20 AM

Well lookie lookie :) I happend to have the McCall's Jan/Feb 2010. But isn't it amazing how you can look at a pattern and think ummm it's ok...then someone does the pattern with a whole different look and bam!!!! you are inspired to make the once not so inspiring pattern....Wow this is on my to do list along with the other millions of patterns I want to do...but think this will move to the very close to the top...unless of course someone else comes along with another gotta do pattern  Oh by the way I love both layouts but lean towards the second picture......

heidikins 06-16-2010 07:59 AM

Thank you so much for this tutorial! Another on my to do list as well.

Beautiful blocks and the colors are fantastic. This will make a beautiful quilt.

Irishlady 06-16-2010 11:41 AM

Ah ha, the light bulb has just come on in my brain, I've got it now. As usual I was overthinking it and making it more complicated than it was.

craftybear 06-16-2010 12:51 PM

wow, awesome, thanks for taking the time to create this tutorial for us

ranger 06-16-2010 12:58 PM

Thanks for this tute....looks doable and I may try it come September.

ckcowl 06-16-2010 03:46 PM

funny how we tend to try to make things so complicated when it turns out to be soooooo simple :)
i was totally amazed when i first went in to lay these out for the first time and realized i had 96 blocks! they went together so fast, and i only traced 48...of course, now i see the math...but it was still a surprise to get so many done in no time at all. and isn't it fun to see how different fabrics make such different blocks? greatest thing about quilting! I love to come up with a block and talk 5 friends into making it with what ever fabric they choose, then we all compare...such differences!!!
i am glad so many of you are enjoying these...jump in and give it a try ;)

peabee 06-16-2010 04:40 PM

REALLY CUTE-THANKS FOR A SIMPLER WAY! satisfaction w/o the hassle!

Teacup 06-16-2010 05:36 PM

So true! When I saw this in the magazine it did NOTHING for me...then I saw yours and thought "I've got to make this..it's gorgeous!!"

dsj 06-17-2010 11:43 AM

I get overwhelmed when I see all that detail in cutting but that is a clever way to make that quilt and the black background is perfect with your color choices. I just might be able to pull that one off. Can you share where you got your pattern?

betlinsmom 06-17-2010 06:02 PM

Oh how beautiful!!! Thanks for the tute!!

littlehud 06-18-2010 12:36 PM

Thanks for the tute
