Tutorial for night and day block

10 Attachment(s)
It was requested of me in the Scrap swap thread to make a tutorial for this block. I posted it there, but thought I would post here as well. It is 6 1/2" block, so cute and great for scraps or leftovers. I just hurried and did this so you could have instructions, so don't look to close at my work, my points are a mess.
All seams are 1/4 " You need a strip 1 1/4" by the width of fabric of 2 colors. Or if you have scraps you can cut those into 1 1/4 inch strips.
Sew the two strips along the length, and press open.
Use triangle ruler to cut pieces as shown, you need 16, (8 of each direction)
lay pieces out as shown. You can put the dark in the middle or the light. ( I like to make two sets and do one of each)
I show how it looks both ways in pics.
Then just sew as shown in pics. Make sure to press seams as you go. I hope this is enough instructions for you to understand. Enjoy!

Thank you so very much for this! Your photos are a great help and I loved seeing a few of these blocks together so as to get an over all feel for the pattern. It's really interesting how the different values play out.

I like this block ... thanks for sharing the tutorial. I am wondering how to make it larger. If I am making a 10 1/2" block, how wide do I cut my strips? I'm thinking 2" but I can't get that answer mathematically. Can anyone help? Thanks!

gramquilter2 01-09-2013 10:39 AM

Fantastic tutorial. I have had the pattern and fabric for making one for 3 years. Maybe this will get me started.

Linda58 01-09-2013 06:26 PM

Thanks for this tute, love it!!
What size strips for a 12" block? Anyone know?

Thanks

MaryMo 01-09-2013 10:20 PM

If my mathematical calculations are correct, a finished 12" block would be double the size of a finished 6" block, so each of the two strips would need to be 2 1/2" wide, with the width of the sewn two-strip set being 4 1/2" wide. The total length would be nearly 30". If I have miscalculated, please let me know.

For a finished 10" block, I am playing around with strips just under 2" each. I'm still playing with this and tend to overthink the process. I'm giving up tonight and will look at it again tomorrow or the next day, depending upon my schedule.

I did this block in just two colors. It's a king size quilt and it came out beautiful. Flaws and all.

Nicely done! Thanks for the tute. I have miscellaneous strips I need to use up, this project sounds perfect.

marys 01-12-2013 08:56 PM

Thank you so much for the great pictures, so easy to follow. I just made one using 2 1/2 strips and I ended up with a 15 inch block. Sure would not take long to make a nice size quilt like this.

javin22 01-13-2013 12:15 PM

So that's what size it makes when you use 2 1/2 inch strips. Never tried it, but good to know. Thanks for trying one.

Just graphed this.....2 inch strips will give you a 12 inch finished square.

Great Tutorial. I like the pattern, your pictures tell us what to do. I also appreciate your sample blocks and how the different values of fabric determine what will show up. Thanks so much.
