NOELLA 08-18-2011 02:58 PM

Ladies I hope this tut will be of some help to you all, this is my first tutso bear with me.
You require three layers ,backing of your choice, batting, and muslin or solid fabric of you choice .Layer one on top of the other, I used basting glue to put mine together, but, you can put yours together what ever way you may wish [pin or baste] I am lazy.
1 charm pack cut in quarters making 196 sqs or 2 1/2" I found pinking the edges was much better you won't have too many strings to cut off .Draw grid 3" apart horizontally and vertically.
before gluing or pinning the sq's down place on muslin to see how you want them, making sure it is to your satisfaction. You will have lines from marking you grid place sq's on 3" lines . When placing sq"s they should be 1/2" between each sq. This is not applique. Do not turn under. After you have put binding on you have to wash.

Hope you can understand my inst. if you don't please let me know. Good luck all Noella

May we see a picture of yours? Does this have sashing? How are the small squares held in place? Do the lines show?

Joanie Owen 08-18-2011 03:41 PM

Just searched and found this
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-145630-1.htm

NOELLA 08-18-2011 04:29 PM

No there is NO SASHING sq's are placed individually on the muslin, so in a sense you will have 4 layers

1st layer 2 1/2'' sq's
2nd layer muslin
3 rd layer batting
4th layer backing
hope I am clear now.

NOELLA 08-18-2011 04:30 PM

yes stitching shows.

Akes 08-19-2011 04:07 AM

What is the measurment of the 3 layers before you start to do the 3 inch grid work? The quilt is beautiful. Thanks for your help.

Mornigstar 08-19-2011 04:39 AM

what kind -size of stitching did you use? In the first photo --when the back part was shown there are strips but yet I expected from your tutorial to see squares on the back.
what am I missing ? Oh, but love the quilt .

mimistutz 08-19-2011 04:52 AM

Very nice! I see this as a way to use up my scraps and I guess there are kink of scrappy edges around the squares since you say don't turn under.
Thanks for sharing.

Geri B 08-19-2011 05:16 AM

I just tuned in so I don't know what Noella and the rest are talking about....where is a pic of this? thanks

mimistutz 08-19-2011 05:25 AM

Look at the link in the third post above

Gail B 08-19-2011 06:00 AM

Thanks for the tute. I may have to add this one to my bucket list.

PatinAtlanta 08-19-2011 06:09 AM

Don't the squares fray a lot?

kbatky 08-19-2011 06:10 AM

Check this site Scroll down to see the photo with a description below. Sounds like raw edge applique.

Evie 08-19-2011 06:11 AM

Here is a tute of sorts I found where she used 2-1/2" strips (Jelly Roll) instead of charms:

NOELLA 08-19-2011 11:56 AM

NOELLA 08-19-2011 11:56 AM

actually I only pinned

NOELLA 08-19-2011 11:59 AM

so sorry about the measurements
backing batting and muslin require 1 1/4 yards

labtechkty 08-19-2011 01:23 PM

Thanks for tut!!!I'm going to try this one!!

Sienna's GiGi 08-19-2011 11:30 PM

I am so getting smart about all this quilting business! I got the tut on the first try without a visual. Woot Woot to me cause I'm sure I am going to mess something up big time next project!

Mornigstar 08-20-2011 04:51 AM

I got an insperation while thinking about this quilt. Was recently given spools of thread --so I thought of a way to use them. Everytime I have to sew around the square look for a similar color in these spools. A sure way to use up the smaller spools but not pay a fortune to sew a satin stitch around. It's early for explanations but do you agree? Why just use up my white ?

peterparley 08-20-2011 06:57 AM

HI NOELLA, PRETTY NAME! COULD YOU PLEASE TELL US WHERE TO GET THE PATTERN FOR THAT LOVELY VINTAGE QUILT. i AM NOT GOOD AT FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS THAT YOU PUT ON THE SIGHT. FOR INSTANCE, WHERE DOES THE GRID COME FROM? IS IT PRE PRINTED FABRIC Or dO YOU MAKE IT FROM MUSLIN? i APPRECIATE ANY INFO YOU CAN GIVE ME. THANKS, peterparley

peterparley 08-20-2011 07:05 AM

Noella, I'm back again and soooooo soon. I just read your instructions again and understand them a little better. How do you adhere the squares? Do you stitch them? that's the part I don't understand/ Thanks again, peterparley

NOELLA 08-20-2011 07:22 AM

I had to draw the grid myself on the muslin, that is why you will have to wash the quilt when you have completed it.

NOELLA 08-20-2011 07:39 AM

the sq's are stitched one row at a time after you can glue each of them to the muslin .When you have completed all 196 of them you will have each sg. stitch on all 4 sides You will have finished you quiltiing now you are ready to put your binding on and wash { you may use any school glue stick I pinned mine on worked fine for me. hope this is more clearer}
by the way remember to quilt from one side to the other making a continuous quilting line.
hope this is much more clearer for you all GOOD LUCK!!!!
Noella

NOELLA 08-20-2011 07:41 AM

Peter you can use school glue or as I did I pinned each sq.
Thanks Noella.

np3 08-20-2011 03:46 PM

Thanks

klarina 08-20-2011 09:53 PM

Thank you. Now I have another to-do on my list!

Maus 08-21-2011 12:04 AM

Thank you for sharing - great quilt - another one to do on the ever growing list!!!

JanieH 08-21-2011 12:15 AM

Thank you for the instructions. I really want to try this.

Patti Mahoney 08-22-2011 01:16 PM

I'm a new quilter and I love this quilt. But, am I understaning this correctly. Is this amost like a rag quilt except you are not sewing the seems together but leaving raw seems exposed and sewing the squares to the muslin? It's beautiful, I love the colors.

I'm a new quiltre and the longer I look at the posts on the QB the longer my to-do or as I call it, my, Ta-Da!!! list gets longer and longer all the time, I've seen sooo many wonderful quilts here.

Patti Mahoney 08-22-2011 01:34 PM

Not to contradict anyone but the quilt in the picture doesn't show raw edges around the squares. Am I missing something? From the tute about, it sounds like there are raw edges to fray when washed???

Patti Mahoney 08-22-2011 01:37 PM

I looked at the link in the third post but that quilt doesn't look like what I'm invisioning for the instructions. Are there supposed to be raw edges that fray when washed. Is that why she pinked the edges for less strings???

Patti Mahoney 08-22-2011 01:41 PM

Ok, this link explains it to me alot better. It's really pretty. I don't mean to sound like a moron, lol, but I'm new to quilting and I'm not too used to all the quilting lingo yet. But, I'm catching on thanks to all of the great people here on the QB. thanks for your link! ! !
