Let's Make My NO-Match Pineapple Blocks!!!

But today, I'm going to show you how I did it! Bear with me as there are lots of pics. PM me if you have questions and please hold your questions til the end. All you need are scraps and a ruler! After studying the block, I quickly realized there was no reference point from the 3rd row on which is why it automatically becomes wonky no matter what you do! But in the end, you'll see my pics I compare with the block we'll make today and some premade ones how really closely they match. The first three rows match well all because there is a reference point! You have the center square everything is built and measured around! The further away you get from that center block, the more distorted the angles become, thus, wonky. That's why I called it my Wonky-Cornered Pineapple in case you haven't read it yet.
Well, let's get started!!!!

Well, let's get started!!!!
start with a 2" square

add a white scrap

measure 1" and cut

square it up

on the opposite side, add another scrap. Always work on opposing sides.

measure 1" and cut

square it up

add another white scrap

measure 1" and cut

square it up

place the block on point and align your ruler 1/4" from the rt. corner

After lining up both sides, cut 1/4" away from the rt. corner of the ctr. sq.

All 4 sides are now cut off!

cut the corner off

On the opposite side, place your ruler 1/4" away from the rt. corner of your ctr. sq. You now have both margins to align This will keep you straight, hopefully, lol. We don't want to cut off any points around the 1st block. Hereafter, you can cut off all points. yay!

Here's your block!!! You made it this far! Yay. We are now ready for scraps -- the BEST part!!!

sew it on

Pick a scrap out from your pile! This is my string pile!

Add the last piece.

square it up

Go ahead and sew on the other 3 scraps and add the 4th one. Notice that your scrap only needs to cover the white area. The corners will be cut off soon.

Working on the opposite side, we'll now cut off the rt. side 1/8" from the intersection.

let's square it up

Go to the opposite side and add another white scrap

You now have this

Add the 3rd piece. Notice that you only need a piece long enough to cover the fdn.

We'll just place our ruler 1/8" from the corner of the ctr. sq. as we want to cut the points off from here on out!

Line up your ruler with the diagonal of the ctr. square (where the pen is pointing) to get the angle correct for cutting off your sides.

Select your 4 scraps for your next round and move them around til they look good!

Pick out 4 dark scraps for this round. We've used all medium prints so far. This next-to-the-last-round will create a framed look for the corners. Then the very last round, we'll go back to medium prints or sherbert colors. I only used one real dark and the other 3 not so dark. Too many black or dark brown colors will give it a harshness and diminish that soft look of the sherberts. Study my quilt to see how I limited the use of too dark colors. I will discuss more about color options at the end. Remember that this row will form the bridges between the blocks so color is important so keep that in mind when choosing colors.
all sewn on. now sq. it up.

Your block now measures 6.75". Look how closely they match!
But they will still be a little wonky!

Now let's talk about color and tips!! Any scraps will work but notice that I did scatter some colors around. I made 6 blocks with turquoise in and scattered those blocks throughout the quilt. This is a must! You need that color! Also, try to limit the use of red in the block because that's your center's color.
Throw in some graphic prints. You need that! Every now and then use a big floral in the block. Plaids, checks and stripes work great!
If you want the corners to sparkle mroe, use a lt. blue fabric in one of the corners and scatter those blocks. I hardly ever use lt. blue in a quilt but discovered this by accident! You know light reflects light so when you put it in a block of med. lights, it really lights things up! Notice that I did use a few of those.
If you want a beautiful quilt, do this in the reverse of what I did -- white centers with a red background will be gorgeous!! The reason this quilt works so well is the balance of warm and cool colors together. Now go have fun with your scraps!!!
