A previous tutorial was deleted at the request of the contributor. You may find this a useful replacement.

You need:

a variety of fabrics
rotary ruler and cutter recommended

Step 1 - start with two contrasting squares. any size, as long as both are the same size

Steps 2 & 3 - cut the square that forms the first "ring" from corner to corner. do that twice to make four quarter-square triangles

Steps 4,5,6 & 7 - sew the triangles to the center square

Step 9, 10 & 11 -
square it off.
lay it face down on the next fabric.
use it as the template for your next square

Steps 12, 13, 14 & 15 -

cut out the square
cut the square into quarter triangles
sew the triangles to the square underneath
press open

Yes this is it . The only thing different is she would cut the "x" after sewing all around the fabric.
