Default 15-91 machine questions

I am the proud new owner of a beautiful 15-91. I am wondering what I can use for a base for this machine? It runs like a champ and walked through several layers if denim at once. The feed dogs drop so I am interested in obtaining a walking foot or a darning foot for this machine.Where do I find these? It has several feet but none are these two that I can tell. Of course I have no Idea what any of the strange looking feet are for but I will be finding out by research.

Sew-classic - the lady has the low shank darning feet and the walking feet you are looking for. http://shop.sew-classic.com/Singer-1...-15-88_c27.htm get the cheap darning foot...

As for a base - a few 2x4s until you can find a case or a cabinet.

Remember, vintage sewing machines take up more room than fabric. And it is an addicting hobby. The positive note is that you can learn how to restore those girls (and guys) and save them from the dump. It becomes a mission.

Odds are you will become a vintage sewing machine addict. I should know because I have become one myself. I have 12 sewing machines and 10 of them are Vintage Shiny Black Singers and I just love them.

for darning feet you should be able to to go walmart or joann and pick up a low shank foot-- I use the one off my brother (along with the snap-on foot adapter off of it, for the rest of my feet, including my 1/4")... the walking foot however for my brother is junk... I have best luck with no walking foot.

Congrats!! You're going to love your 15-91!! If your machine has no base, haunt Craig's list and ebay (search for "nearest first") for a cabinet. Make sure that you know the measurements of your machine and the hinged post requirements. Watch closely what you purchase, a cabinet for a Kenmore (seems to be most commonly found in my area) will NOT fit a Singer...on the other hand, if you don't mind a bit of woodworking, you can make an insert for a Kenmore cabinet so that it will hold your Singer..

Hi, what part of Ohio are you in? I am in SW Ohio. Charlene Phillips of the Sew Box has written a book on vintage attachments that is excellent. She, too, lives in SW Ohio. http://www.thesewbox.com
Good luck, but I am sorry to say I see signs of a vintage machine junkie in you already! I should know, I am one also!

If you are going cabinet hunting, a quick way of telling if a cabinet is a Kenmore cabinet is the opening will have sharp corners. Singer and others will have rounded corners. This can save you a little time when searching on CL and Ebay if you are looking for a cabinet for a Singer machine. You will still have to measure the hinge pin distance on the cabinets with rounded corners in the openings.

Another thing you can try if you don't want a cabinet is to post a wanted ad on CL for a vintage Singer sewing machine case or base. I was looking for the same thing you are - a base for a 15-91. I got an original Singer grass cloth case for 5.00. It can never hurt to ask. I wouldn't pay more than 20.00 for a full case if you can avoid it.
