Default 15-91 problem

I finally got my 15-91 cleaned, oiled and rewired. I kept having a problem with the upper thread breaking. I could only sew about 4 inches. I double checked the threading diagram, changed the needle, adjusted tension, took upper tension apart and cleaned again, etc. Nothing worked. Finally, I put some tape over the thread cutter on the needle bar. Problem solved! When the thread uptake lever is at the low position, the thread is very loose and was catching on the thread cutter. Has anyone else had this problem?????? If so, how did you solve it.

I've never had that problem before... *thinks* is it going though the loop in the middle of the silver plate? That should pull it toward the front of the needle bar and there should be a small guide on the needle bar on the needle clamp.

This is actually what my 15 looks like. The location of the guide in question is labeled here as #6.:

sounds like maybe the little spring on the tension isn't working properly. that should raise and lower to help keep the thread snugger when the uptake lever goes down (the spring goes down to, helping to take out some of the slack).

I agree with Cathy. Either the spring is broken, misadjusted, or has been bypassed when threading.

This should help from the technical end.

Thank you for the info. I think you are right about the spring. I will give that a try, or replace the spring and then let you know.
