My faithful Bernina 1630 has been under the weather for a little over a year, and I can't afford to get it fixed. I was borrowing a Viking 440, but the owner eventually wanted it back () so another friend GAVE me one of her 301s (second run) (tan) that is beautiful to behold, and runs like a dream.

I'm curious however about the zig-zag attachment, and whether it works. They always have one in the original box for about $20.00 on eBay but no info.

Opinions? In time I'll get my 1630 repaired, but in the meantime, I'd like to see what the 301 can do.

The clamp on ZZ attachments give me fits. I've tried them on several Singer machines and just can't get them to work right. If you do get one and get it to work, please let me in on the secret.

Sorry, but I've only heard negatives about the zigzag attachments! The 301 is a fabulous machine and does a great straight stitch. When you add a do-dad that mucks with that...well.... I would save your money for something else.

Oh! I have a zigzag for my 301. It came with the machine with other attachments. I will get it out tomorrow and give it a run. Report will be on your desk by ... sometime tomorrow afternoon. LOL Right in the middle of making a new table runner for my new table.

Here are some stiches I made with my zigzager.

Joe: Did you have instrutions with your zigzager? If not, pm me and I can get them to you. OR, if you need pics of my zigzager.
I can say that I'm having no problems with anything. Just have to play around with it a little to get the stich you want.

Wifie says: "We are jealous". Wow, NONE of my attempts have come out anywhere near that nice.

I have two of those Singer ZZ attachments that use the cams. I have instructions with both of them. I have tried them on several machines and just can't get them to work worth a hoot. My ZZ stitch always comes out real narrow, and I can't compress the stitch length enough to get any decent patterns.
Both of the attachments are in good shape, clean and lubed.

Did you do anything particular when you set up the attachment?
What machines does your instructions say yours is for?
Mine say they are for the Mdl 15, 201, 221, and maybe the 301.

Joe: Mine says for 301. There is an adjustment on the side(A) for the width and the stitch regulator is for closeness of stitch. Lever B is for the zigzag. AND of course you know not to lower the feed dogs. Don't know if I'm explaining this right. I have included the instructions for mine. Hope you can read. Once you get that thing going, you will really like the stitches you can get out of it.

Thanks, I can read them just fine. From what I can see that is a different style of instructions than mine came with.

I dug one of my two out and here is what it says:
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING
SINGER*
AUTOMATIC ZIGZAGGER
No. 160985 for Singer* Machines of Classes 15, 201, 221 and 1200
and
No. 160986 on Machines of Class 301

The instruction book is date coded 155 or January 1955.


OK, my ZZ attachments are both a 160985 units.

My second instruction booklet has different part numbers on it, but says they work with the same machines.
It's date coded 1257 or December 1957. Internally they are the same.

So, I guess I'll give them a try on my 201 and perhaps the 221 and see what happens.

those instructions are different than mine....and mine say printed in Great Britain.

basically saying the same thing in 25 pages......the last two pages about oiling may be very important to successful pattern results....especially about drop of oil on the cams.

If anyone needs these pages i will try to take a photo when the sun rises.

My Bernina 1630 is at my daughters right now, visiting, but it is only a 15 minute drive (she is a brand new grandmother and is making fitted bed sheets and diaper covers and all kinds of things that need all those stitches,for elastic and such). Meanwhile my wonderful 301A continues to sew with me everyday these past 55 years, what a great 'friend'.
