I am considering purchasing a Singer FW 221K, 1952, black model. It has a UK motor but the seller is including a new adapter. My question is when I looked it up what I find is black 221s were only made in the US...some 221Ks were made in Scotland...Is this likely what it is? I am mainly wondering if it would be possible to put a USA motor on it? Or would it even be necessary if it has the adapter? Lastly would it be the same high quality as the American one?

I think if the model is a "K" it was made in the plant in Scotland.

Thanks mom-6, I am pretty sure thats right. I just don't know if the quality is the same..the lady who is selling it says she bought a new converter and tried it and everything works. Pictures show a machine that looks beautiful, but looks are only part of the deal, eh? LOL...We are by no means rich, but I have saved to buy a fw, and I want to get the best I can...this is really a tough decision!

The black models were made in both America and Scotland. The serial number will tell where, but the 220V motor pretty much says "made in Scotland".
What type of adapter is the seller offering with the machine? You actually need a voltage converter, which are chunky and weighty.
Yes, if you want to change the motor to a 110V it is possible and easy. Used 110V motors are available online.

I really appreciate all the help you are providing! Seller says she bought the adapter recommended by theoldsewingmachineman.com after asking them if the motor could/should be changed. Its a Simcon brand, here is a link to the listing:

Thanks Cathy! My only concern really was the difference in motors and how they were built..as I hear the 221 is such a workhorse. With much research and finding out motors are same excluding voltage and your helpful posts I can't wait to get in my new featherweight!
