Belt for 15-96 treadle

Belt for 15-96 treadle
It seems that someone on here once talked about making a belt for a treadle sewing machine. I just purchased a Singer 15-96 treadle and the belt is very old and broken. Since I have so much leather I wondered if I could make my own. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I bought a leather belt for my treadle and so I can't see why you couldn't make one if you have the leather. It is a long strip (fairly thick leather) and it has a nail/heavy wire that connects the two ends together. Not sure how to describe it other than like a one of those very thick staples.

Thanks for the info. I have the old broken belt so I can see the staple that is in it. I notice that the leather that came on it is round, does it matter if I use flat leather?

I don't know why the leather is round, it needs to be able to grip the wheels so they turn, and maybe the rounded leather is stronger and stretches less. When I bought mine it was from a sewing machine repair shop for $8.00, I noticed on the internet they are much less, but that was before tax and shipping chargers. Some people make them out of the rubber tubing used in fish tanks.

I think the leather is round for good contact to turn the machine. It also stretches very little. You can try a pece of leather, what have you got to lose. At the very worse, it won't work due to stretching. The belts are less than $5 at my sewing machine repair shop though.

Most leather treadle belts you buy are 3/16" diameter. I'd use 1/4" if I could find it.
If you make your own, it might work better if you make a slightly tapered ( at the cross section ) belt. It might grip the wheels better.
