I recently inherited my mom's Bernina 830 machine. It's heavy and looks well built and comes with several feet. Is this worth anything, by that I mean should I hang onto it and use it or should I donate it? I have several machines already and really don't sew much. I do love my FW and my computerized machine but I don't sew often and I don't have much room either.

Mostly the price depends on the actual condition of the machine. I have a 1530.

I've been inquiring about the Berninas on this forum recently and people really love them, particularly the 730, 830 and 930. They're really holding their value.

The 830 is the last of the all mechanical top models, I think there where some non-electronic 930s or at least 900 series. I don't think you will find a better quality straight stitch or satin zigzag; take it out, clean, oil and make a few stitch samples and compare with you Featherweight and your computerized machine. Except if you have a Featherweight 222, it has the narrowest free arm I've seen among the domestic models.

I have the Bernina 930 purchased new in 1983. I used it so much I wore the feed dogs off. It will sew thru thick harness leather. Other than that it has never needed any service or parts. The late Bernina 830's & 930 are solid machines. I think the 930 was the last all metal, non-computer, machine. If you don't want it then sell it. I'd give it a good try out first & see if you like it.

you might have good luck checking with the local sewing machine dealer to see if they will sell it on consignment.

I work for a Bernina dealer who has been in business since the 830 Records were being made. A lot of people still love them and I see them come in for service regularly. I have a 910, which is mechanical except for an electronic circuit for the needle stop up (and needle up/down by heel tap). The stitch quality is excellent, they are smooth and solid. I think you should try it out before you decide not to keep it. It might be your new favorite.

This is my favorite vintage machine! There are 2 nylon gears in the Bernina 830 that can make or break the value of the machine. If the vertical shaft and camstack gears are in good shape, you could get up to $600 for it. A woman came into the shop with an 830 that she bought on Ebay. She lost control of the auction and paid $1000! The gears can be replaced, and the machine is worth doing it. When people ask us about these machines at the shop, we tell them to keep them and pass them down to then next generation.

I inherited my Mom's Bernina 830 Record 17 years ago...it's sure a work horse! Still going strong, oiled/cleaned well when I use it. I'm sure glad I kept it.
