Didn't a lot of those have turtle back motors? I don't think I have a turtle back yet(maybe the one in storage that I haven't looked at) but I want one as an example of the evolution of electric sewing machines.

I had to do a post on this machine, because of the play on words. in this case a play on letters ( FW ). after all it's is a FW. I've never seen a singer that has FW on it . LOL.
The base is all taken care of along with is dome / bentwood top. The machine looks as if , it had very little use. The drive wheel is hard. not to bad as far as flat spots. on this one to get it to works. I simply warped masking tape around the wheel.
In my time, I've had quite afew of these friction drive machines, even with new wheel they still slip often on take off or at a thick seam. I did piece about a 3x4 denim section on it, just to make sure it was working.
A hand crank would be cool. I could and have made mounts for the aftermarket singer type cranks.. unlike many wheel drive machines , it does have a pulley on the hand wheel, it could be treadled, This machine does turn forward
But It's already made it's way into the archives ( back bedroom )

turtle back motors , never heard that term for them, but I'd have to say yes ... Thats is what they look like.
so a motor you could never replace.. I have two ( now) with this type motor . There issues is tension on the drive wheel.

xxxxxxxxxxxx,
I have a very similar machine. First get a new drive wheel, they can be had. Then if your machine is like mine the motor is attached with interlocking tabs on both the motor housing and pilar. To tighten the drive wheel against the hand wheel you can rotate the motor housing slightly so the drive wheel moves towards the curve of the hand wheel.
It is not easy to do this and you have to be careful not to bend or damage the housing.
Neither my FREE machine, nor any of the other friction drive machines I have, have yet to slip on any of my sewing.
