Default Help, What is it? 27, 28, 127,128 or something else?

We have this treadle that I want to start using it but would like to read up on how to adjust things. I have found the stitch length and do know how to load the long bobbin. And would like to know what is really is. I think the number on the base of the machine is 15 392 826, from what I have found that should be about 1989. But the first digit is a little warn, might be a L? Here are some pictures.

Here is the back

Its cabinet

I don't know if the cabinet it is in is the original one, or something someone put the machine into. There are no markings on the cabinet of any kind.
I know that this board is an awesome resource for information, thanks for all the help in advance.

The first number is actually 15. According to the database it was made in 1898. And with the bobbin winder being low it would be a 27 I think.

Wow. that is a beautiful, unique cabinet. I've don't ever remember seeing a "Singer" cabinet like that, There was an open side cabinet, but I don't remember seeing the front like that. http://ismacs.net/singer_sewing_mach...net_23-24.html or maybe look at cabinets for 127 as I think some listed there are for the 27

I can't "prove" it, but I would say it is a late VS2 with rectangular bed. The VS2 was the precursor to the 27; There is a 1893 Singer Catalog at http://www.sil.si.edu/DigitalCollect...0038/index.htm There is a thread here about some earlier machines at My new Singer 27 VS2 Treadle c.1895! However, they don't have that shape back inspection plate, which is more like the VS2 with fiddle base.

I'm not positive, but seem to think the decals do not match the time frame (1898) from what I've seen, but could be wrong.

Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do.

I can't tell you anything about the machine but I'd be willing to bet money that's not a Singer cabinet.

I have a 27 that dates to 1893, based on the serial #. It also has the teardrop shape inspection plate.

The decals do look like the later 66/99 decals. I have never seen them on such an older machine.

Well, what was I thinking? The # on mine begins with 11, no preceding letter. I'm sure I looked it up when I got it...

Thank you for helping, I have looked up the serial number, and that is what confuses me about this machine. The 1898 date shows other decals, and this is a shuttle. The size matches to a 27 but not decals.

My DH and I were talking and we think this may have been one of the machines that we purchased at an auction while we lived in Scotland, which might account for the oddities?

It was common for dealers to "refresh" or "modernize" the appearance of trade-ins and refurbs. This also hapened if the machine was overhauled for electicity. I had a motorized 66-1 backclamp parts machine wearing 1950s decals once.

Forgot to say the decals look like a Filagree variant (1911-1940 on Ismacs decal listing).
