The hand crank on mine has a handle that flips over when not in use, but the mechanism still is about two inches beyond the fly wheel.

According to the Sew Classic website, Jenny tests and lubricates each crank before it is shipped. I'll post my thoughts when the crank arrives. She also sells spoked wheels.

KLO - We had no problems during the storm thankfully. All our utilities are underground and I think that helps, although the wires must be above ground somewhere along the line. Also, I have a small battery backup (like for a computer) that will run the Rocketeer, if the need to sew gets too bad.

Great looking 99. Please post pics of it with the HC on it......if it all fits together well.

Glad to hear you were fine. Once you get the handcrank for your new--to-you 99, you won't have to worry about the battery backup.
I will be interested to hear how you like the handcrank you get. I really want to buy one but keep hesitating since there have been both good and bad reviews on them.
