Lots of good comments here, I wish I had listened to my old art teacher (who was really into quilting) when I asked her the best machine for quilting, as I was going to buy a new machine. She said a simple no bells and whistles straight stitch machine. I ended up buying a Viking with embroidery module - all the bells and whistles. Although I enjoy the machine and have gotten lots of use out of it, financially a featherweight would have been much more affordable at that time! Now I have purchased a featherweight since so many have high praises for them, and I love it!

Yep, for quilting a good straight stitch machine is really all you need. I bought a FW too because so many people sing their praises. I like it. I don't love it, but I see the appeal. I'm just not much of a Singer gal at heart(except for my 201).

Thanks for all the comments to my question. I was just curious as to what others thought were the best to buy. I guess I am a singer girl. I have passed this down to my dd. I don't have the resources or space to collect too many, but am on the lookout for a 301 and a 401. I think that will be all I'll need.
I did enjoy everyone's comments.

LOL, I was that way when I first got the bug. When I got up to around 20 or so, I was out of room and had to make some decisions. Sell some to make room for more? Get rid of furniture to make more room? Get the last kid to move out so's to have more room? Yes, yes and yes.

I like the 403 and the 503 better.
