Default Featherweight just turned up on Houston CL

Not too sure about that price. The machine has some appearance issues, and I found it interesting that someone has apparently stripped the black cover off the carrying case. On the outside at least, it looks like an improvement I'm tempted to make to my own. I think I remember reading somewhere that they were made of oak, but maybe that was only the early ones. It's odd that oak was so abundant (and dovetailing so commonplace) in those days that the Singer people thought it was a good idea to hide it under that black stuff. Also, I believe that it was the hide glue used on that black cover that is the main cause of the icky smell common in these boxes.

I'm not looking for another one, so thought I'd mention it in case anyone in the area might want to know. I don't know the seller.

Beautiful. If I thought my case would look like that without the covering, I'd be tempted to pull it off. But mine's from the 50's and I don't think it's like that underneath. Never have been able to get the icky smell out of it.

I think that box was made for the machine and not one of the original cases. I have one that looks like that as well but it was made for the machine. Just a guess on my part. As for the smell of the cases, I always think of it as an antique smell and never thought it was smelly. Interesting how we all see things differently! It looks like it is in fair shape.

I have read that this is the real case. I do not want to take my covering off-it is in good condition-but think these are original cases. There are a few different styles of the cases .

I think it is VERY overpriced for the condition it is in. I sold mine last summer for $250 and it was in very good condition. I sold it for that because I wanted it to sell, not stay on CL for months, as the higher priced ones do around here.

THAT machine has a lot of paint chipping and looks like it might have a case of aluminum rot....can't tell from the pictures. But, yes, the case is beautiful!
