My daughter works for a company that goes in and cleans out repossesed houses, etc. Today she called me with the news that she had acquired an antique sewing machine. It is black withgold inlay with the model #D40604 on a little brass (?) oval plate on the front and the name Universal all over it & the patent number says Universal-Japan. Can anyone tell me anything about this machine like age, where it comes from, etc?

It is a really nice machine and I love the one that I have! It was more than likely made by Koyu-Seiko and in the 40's to 50's. I need to see the photo of it to tell you a little more about it. It is a model 15 and the feed dogs will drop on it for FMQ. The Universal that I have is my go to machine.

ok, will post pics as soon as it is in my possession. Thanks for responding---should have it by tonight. Am excited. There was a featherweight too, but lots of parts missing and we think someone had dropped or thrown it because the head was cracked. Just my luck. Watch for pics later. thanks
