Default I Got One!!! A Singer 15-91(?)

For some reasons locally finding a relatively decent priced Singer 15-91 is rather difficult. Often they're priced way above my personal price point of $35. Which is the reasons why I usually end up with Kenmores and Brother's machine with the occasional Japanese badged machine.

Well today for what ever reason, the stars aligned, karma smiled... *shrugs* I finally stumbled upon a lovely Singer that looks a bit...rough. It was a smidgen above my price point *cough 60 cough* I know that its a bit high but locally they're pricing them at around $100+ so quite literally it's a steal. Serial # is AH398239 If it's one of those 'weird' model 15 let me know lol I'll be trying to figure out how to clean and get her gussied up. Any idea's on how to fix the deck would be great and if you have suggestions on how to keep the motor from smoking. *nods* yup little wisps of smoke, just when you start sewing.

I need to extend the cord for the controller. Any tutorials on how to get in to the foot pedal? I think the three prong connector is wired in the same way as a kenmore right? Those i know how to fiddle with.

Here's the deck it needs a lot of help. Any suggestions on repairing the bubble in the paint.

I don't think that the case is original to your machine. It looks like a 301 trapezoid case and the foot controller also looks like one that would come with a 301.

Congrats on getting the 15-91.... Yeah!! I have a couple and love them for FMQ. I have one at the summer house and one at the winter house, I love them so much. I had to put on new wire on one of them going from the plug to the foot controller but didn't have to rewire the motor, thank goodness. I know people here will help you if you need that.

Mine were both in cabinets so I didn't have to deal with a case.... and I also think the controller is not the original but if it works, that's okay. I'm sure you're going to get lots of comments that will help you. You've come to the right place.

Oh, I forgot to mention, when I changed the wire to the controller, I was very concerned about which post was positive and which post was negative. But, I was told that the controller doesn't have a +/- so I didn't have to worry about that. I hope that little fact helps. Also, I got new wire at sew-classic. They sell 2 grades of wire.... SPT-1 and SPT-2. I was told to use SPT-2 for the controller wire..... and I measured the length on the original wire and it was about 6-ft long.

That foot controller looks like the Touch & Sew controller. Look on the bottom to see if if there is a removable plug. If so, you remove it, and there will be a screw that you can remove to access the insides.

Model 15s tend to be priced higher around here too. $60 isn't a bad price. Keep in mind how nice a machine it is too.
Congrats on finding one.

So i put her through her paces to day. The motor smoked a little and the foot pedal is either slow or super fast, no in between. But then i oiled her she was bone dry. It was a miracle she ran as well as she did. A bit of dust and fluff under the needle plate,it really is a remarkably clean machine.

I pulled off her motor and removed the old gunk. I think it was rewired before because even that was just a smidgen dirty. The problem with the smokey motor was that there was oil on the bushings and some on the armature. I couldn't remove the armature so i used a No Flash Electro contact cleaner and made sure it ran clean then polished the copper through the bushing opening. Using a headless q-tip (nipped the cotton tip off). I cleaned off the bushings and then put the entire thing back together.

So far no smoke. Yay! I'm looking at sew-classic for an electronically controlled foot pedal. Any recs? She's really quite a well made machine.

Do you know the difference between SPT-1 and SPT-2? My dad the electrician is plotting to go to the local DIY store and pick up general wire for things.

The SPT-2 has slightly thicker insulation.
