Default Is Vintage Sears Model 2142 a Singer????

A friend in search of a good vintage machine under $200 has found this on CL http://lynchburg.craigslist.org/atq/3226896928.html

We don't know if these Sears machines were made by Singer in those days, although I thought they were until late 70s/early 80s. If they were, is there a way to determine what Singer model it would be/the year made/the value/whether it's a desirable one?

She can't afford to make a mistake and this will be her primary sewing/quilting machine. I told her I knew the right folks to ask and hoped to get back to her in few hours. Love y'all!

Jan,

No, it's not a Singer. It's a Japanese made machine and would if complete be a good machine. It's missing the bobbin cover and I don't know how easy those are to find. It might be there in one of the boxes the seller mentioned, but make sure.
Also it uses cams. Notice the trap door on the top. If those are not included they could be difficult to ID and locate.
There is a lot of different kinds.

Other than that it does look like it's in decent condition.

To the best of my knowledge, Singer never branded their machines for another company to sell.
Lots of people think they made machines for Sears though.

This is an interesting article about the sears machines, and includes a copyright infringement on Singer, that may be where the rumor started.

If you can find out what the first digits are on the machine, we can probably tell you who -did- make it.
for instance 158.xxx means it was made by a company called Jaguar/Maruzen

It's a model 84...I have one and it's a wonderful machine! I might have an extra set of cams if needed...
