Default Help in replacing take up spring in a 1901 Model 27 Singer

Hi,

I have been having fun with this old one. But-----

How do I remove the old spring?

Do I just unscrew the stud bolt? Is it a lefty loosen thread?

This machine is very dirty. The old oil is all solid varnish so hard to see.

Any help you can give would be appreciated.

I did take a picture and will post it soon.

Ethel

Your manual will have an exploded diagram of the tension dial. Yes unscrew it the usual way.
Hardest thing is catching the end so it points the right way, and that's not really hard either.

That's the one I was wondering about on my 66. The stud comes off? Do I need to screw on the end piece to keep it from splitting?

No. Stick the screwdriver in the split sideways and it will easily turn

Thanks so much. I got it out OK. The new spring I have is the wrong one. I have to order one. The one I have comes off the coils to the left and I need one to the right.
Such is life, makes life interesting seems I just get one problem solved and another pops up. I did get the feed dogs replaced and the bobbin winder and most of the metal cleaned up. I will post a picture when I get it done.

To get the post out, I put the end screw back on and use a screwdriver between in the hole to get it out.

I put the end back on too. Less chance of springing the ends of the stud apart that way.

I will put the nut back on when I put it back in. Still waiting for a spring.
Thanks for your help!
