At one time I had a conversion chart of thread sizes from Coats & Clark. But the last computer crash lost it. I've been back to the C&C site and could not find it. I'll have to look through the C&C site again, and my printed copies.

I don't have anything to add to this discussion...but I really want to thank all of you for your knowledge. It is better info than you find on some of the professional sites.

I do all of my quilting on a home sewing machine. I like the Superior top stitch needles 90/14 amd 100/16.
The machine that has the longest throat is, my Viking Sapphire 875(10"), followed by the Pfaff 1222e(8"), Bernina 930(7") and Bernina 1031(6.5"). For many years the 1031 was my only machine. I quilted queen size quilts with the 1031, it wasn't fun. I do both walking foot and FM quilting. I make many baby and twin size quilts every year for the 2 charities that I make quilts for.
I've tried quilting with the Pfaff 60 treadle, its okay for straight line quilting, but not FM, the back looked messy. I might have to see how the White rotary does. The above mentioned electric machines all share a large Horn cabinet.

OK, back on the original subject now, I found the thread size chart I was looking for:

Here is it is:

So the 30wt and Size 50 threads are the same. I thought so by the way the looked and felt. And in my other machines that use 15x1 needles they work fine through the size14s.
On the 9W-7 they work fine through the size 16 Singer 127x1's but not the Schmetz size 14 MY1014B's.

Here is my theory. The Schmetz MY1014 B needles have such a large scarf that the needle is basically too far from the hook to properly form the loop. So it gets cut or broken.

I have a couple of Organ brand MY1014B needles that have a much smaller scarf I'll try next. Might be educational.

I also have another 9W-7 that has been altered so it can use 15x1 needles. I'm thinking of switching to that one to do a needle / thread test. I have all the sizes I need in the 15x1s.

Contacted CTSUSA regarding Organ MY1014 needles in size 16 and 18 which they claim are disco.

"The largest size that organ currently produces is a 90/14. The larger sizes are being discontinued."

Go to the Organ site, Product Info "User Brochures"
{ http://www.organ-needles.com/english...t/download.php }
and download the batch download at the top.
Then on page 12 it shows the MY1014B as SM x 1014B and goes to size 18. I have looked and haven't found any sources that actual carry them.

If I can (when I do) I'm planning on ordering a 100 pack of every size 14 and above.

Just need to find a source that stocks all the needle sizes. Or will order them.

Scarf to the left, OK, I'll remember that. I'm going to do a test of the Schmetz vs the Organ needles since they have different size scarfs.

Thanks Jon,

Well so much for that idea. Looks like the 9w-7s will go on the shelf and a 66-18 machine will go in the nice refinished cabinet. If the largest needles I can get are 14s then that just won't do.

Jon

This is the only distributor Organ shows on their web site for the US. I'm gonna give them a call tomorrow if I remember.

DIAMOND NEEDLE CORP.
60 COMMERCE ROAD
CARLSTADT, NEW JERSEY 07072 U.S.A.
TEL : +1-201-507-1771
FAX : +1-201-507-1715

No doubt I'll get the same info you did, but I was gonna call 'em anyway and got side tracked.

I'm sure most of us are not at a loss for sewing machines to use but the Singer 9W and Wheeler & Wilson D-9 are so good it's sort of a shame to set aside for lack of or expense of a proper sized needle. Hopefully a large size replacement needle or 127x1 stockpile will be found.

Jon,

You are so right about retiring good sewing machines due to a lack of needles. If I could come up with a 100 or so of 16s and 18s I'd be set. I use more 14s than any other size.

All my 127x1s are size 16, all my MY 1014Bs are 12 and 14. So I need smaller 127s and larger MY1014s.

My other 9W-7 has already been altered to use 15x1 needles in addition to the 127x1 and MY1014Bs.
So I suppose I'll set it in the cabinet instead of the other one.

Called Diamond Needle today. They don't stock the 16s or 18s in the MY1014Bs either. So unless I can:
A: Find some 127x1 needles in the sizes I need
~or~
B: Get the 9W-7 #2 machine altered like the #1 machine is, the #2 machine is officially retired.

Phooey!
