Universal refers to the point of the needle, not the type or size. A universal needle is a regular 15x1 TYPE of needle, the type used in most household(domestic) machines made today. The point is not quite sharp, but not quite ball point either, so theoretically it's good for wovens and knits. To me a universal needle is universally good for nothing. A 24x1 needle is a different TYPE of needle, most toy machines use it.

I love Google.
Found a source for not only the itty-bitty needles, but also the spool pin and some little felt rounds to go under the spool. Got 3 needles, the rounds and the pin for less than $10 (including the shipping). They even had some new tension disks. I'll wait and see how she runs with the new needle and pin before I get the disks. I may be able to just remove them and sand off the rust and they'd be ok. We'll see.

OK, so I got all my stuff in.. fiddled and tweaked... tweaked a little more... and now she's sewing a really nice little chain-stitch. I'm probably going to get some new tension disks, as that seems to be the one place left that is fiddle-y.
Hubby didn't think I'd get her going.

Yippee! What a beautiful little "Tiny" machine you have! And, you got it working ... how fun!!
I won one that looks almost identical to yours, except it didn't come with the box or the instructions. I took it into my favorite local sewing machine repair shop, and, he said that there's no way that it ever worked! But, after hearing how much fiddling you and your dear husband had to do with yours ... I'm thinking that my repair guy maybe just didn't want to do enough/any fiddling!!!
Congratulations on your beautiful new baby!!
