OK, found this at a thrift store(!) for $99:

Union Special 57700. Does 4-thread coverstitch and "double lock stitch". (I assume that means a two-line double-needle stitch which implies it could do a 4-thread safety. Not sure, though.) Self-lubricating with all parts (mounting bolts/nuts, spool tower and platforms with foam insulation for industrial cones, a W. German wood-handled screwdriver made of vanadium, dust cover, etc.) in original packaging except a power table and motor. I don't think this machine has ever been used. The thing is absolutely pristine and even has the original packing grease, sound insulation felt strips, and is mounted on what looks like original ply. Is that a binding plate pre-installed?

Check out the lower looper arm -- it's huge! Can you tell I'm excited?

Most of the industrial binder feet I looked at go at a right angle to the line of sewing. It might be a binder or a hemmer too. Either way I am very envious. Good find!

I'm going to display my ignorance here. I know nearly nothing about industrials and even less about specialized machines like that one. I'm guessing it's a coverstitch machine that makes the two rows of stitching on the outside of a hem? Whatever it does, it's a nice looking machine and it does look brand new. I do like the looks of the Union Special machines. They appear well built to me. Great find!

Wow that's a beaut! I can't believe you found that in a thrift store! That is a serious machine! You'll have to post again with pics when you get is sewing. I'm thinking the coverstich would be a double line of stitching on a hem edge. Sounds wonderful!
