Default Jones Machine

I was just given a beautiful Jones sewing machine (British company, bought by Brother a couple of decades ago) that was brought to America in the 20's or 30's. I have the serial number but cannot figure out the model number....and I need to order a belt for this lovely treadle machine. Looking online didn't help. Can anybody send me in a direction??? I think with a belt, I will have it working but if not.....you folks are always here! I appreciate that so much!

Treadle belts are normally sold in 72" lengths and trimmed to the correct size. They also come in 2 thicknesses 1/4" and I think 5/16ths. For the time being you might try a leather bootstring. A picture may possibly get you the model number or at least the type.

They also make a 3/16" size. Singer used that one a lot. If you don't have the correct one and if no one here can tell you the correct size, I'd go with the 3/16 or 1/4" size. A smaller belt will be easier to fit than a larger one.

Rodney, thank you. It was the 3/16ths I was thinking of,5/16ths would be a little big

Forgive me if this is a dumb question but with a circular belt, how would I trim it? Seems like any trimming would break the circle and it would just be a long strip....

The belts are not round. You have to cut them to the length you want and either staple them together (staple comes with belt) or use dental floss and a needle to sew them together. You butt the ends together.

In a bind, tie a panty hose with tight knot. It adapts nicely. It works. My g-m did.

One of my treadles has a panty hose belt as we speak. It's been on there for over a year.

Good tip with the floss. The cross section of the belt is round but they are sold as a cut length, generally 72", and not as a loop. You trim to fit then join the ends as said above.
