Default Yesterday! What a day...A Story

My yesterday story: I made an appointment five days ago to drive about 45 minutes to the next town and look at a scarab decal White treadle. The woman called me on Monday and asked if I still wanted to come and see it Tues. morning because there was a man that wanted it but I had called first. I said I still wanted to see it. From what I can tell that man has been all over our area buying up everything he can get his hands on or so it seems!!

I was looking forward to the next morning because I was also going to look at a few other machines, stop by several antique/thrift stores and have a leisurely drive up sipping a café latte listening to the beach boys and just enjoy the cool weather and the day.

Then on Monday night while eating a bite of mashed potatoes I broke a tooth! It was a tooth that my dentist told me two weeks ago it had to be taken care of. My dentist happens to be in the town I was going to spend my day at so I got up early ( not nearly as excited as I was the night before mind you!) and drove to the dentist office first thing not getting my cup of java because I didn't want coffee breath.

Now here is where it gets interesting. I told them I had to make an appt. to come back later because I had to keep another appt. I was GOING to go see that treadle machine. I put seeing a machine before my tooth!! That's got to mean something. That is how I am with my Lampworking.

I saw it and didn't buy it although it was beautiful and would have needed very little done to it. The sad part is when I got there I saw it was covered with snakes. Asps I think they are called in Egypt. I couldn't get past the snakes. I hate snakes.

So I passed, let the man have the snakes. On the way back to the dentists office I stopped at a great antique store and looked at a few more sewing machines. They wanted waaaay too much. Arrived at the dentist office, and decided to have the tooth pulled, a bone graft put in and then bridge work later. The dr. wanted to do a root canal, crowns, build ups etc and we just don't have that kinda of money and I had places to go and sewing machines to look for. So I didn't have her do the surgery then although she wanted too. I also like to take antibiotics first, so I have to go back next Thurs. for the surgery.
Feeling kinda blue as I drove away from the dentists office I got some taquitos ( careful to chew on the left side) and a coffee and headed out to some favorite consignment shops.

While browsing the warehouse I saw a poor helpless dirty Vogue in the back corner all forlorn with no top and missing parts surrounded by refrigerators. Took 10 minutes to move the appliances to get back to her.

Now mind you I wouldn't have given her a second glance last month! But after joining this forum I seem to be able to spot them and feel? for them. I had the guy move everything and drag her out and take her up to the counter. No tags, no top and he said well, he would try to find it in the records ( consignment shop) so I started walking around and found the top on the other side of the shop. By this time I was getting kinda mad at the lack of care of her while on consignment!!! I got him down to $32.00 half off. He said with disgust and I quote: That thing should have been gone a long time ago as it's been here since the store opened!! I can take half off but NO more. Okie Dokie.

I saved her and I saved a treadle also half off that had been there too long from the same place at the same time and I picked up a nice little Signature a day earlier off of Craigslist and it was only $30.00.

I tell you I really felt bad for that Vogue and I will probably keep her forever. So I had a good day after all. After I got home I knew I couldn't get the treadle out by myself so I proceeded to take it apart. It wasn't hard as the screws were all rust and just about fell out.
Should be a good project for hubby. This treadle came with three boxes of supplies. If it sews nice I will keep it too after we get her all cleaned up. It is a Vindex Special. I know nothing about these machines but I did get a number off of the Vogue. JNZ 589209. Badged, some online people said White and some said Viking. After I got her home I looked on the bottom to get the serial number and found all of the missing parts!! YAY!!!
I guess I am now becoming a true vintage sewing machine buff. And I LIKE IT!!!

Pictures below and none of these little gems have been cleaned up yet, as there is now a queue...

Wow one heck of a story. Sorry about your tooth but happy you found some treasures and went home happy.

I'm with you I would of walked away from the snakes too. Maybe the man put them there on purpose so you wouldn't take it. LOL who would sale anything with snakes all over it? That's crazy!!

The scarab machine is a very popular one and is beautiful. I loved the machine but never got to see the pretty decals close up until yesterday. Boy was I disappointed. shudder. LOL

Great story! Yes, it seems like you are well and truly on your way.

Heather says I am magnetically attracted to rust, so I can relate.

Where did they have the one that had all the snakes crawling all over it. Snakes are one thing asps are usually venomous. Did they have it in snake den. Glad your day ended nicely. Machines look great. Hope your tooth gets better.

Congrats on the fun machines you did bring home. I agree with you--I'd pass on the snakes. Yuk!
Hope your tooth situation works out ok~
