If you buy it tell the seller not to clean it at all.

Joe,
Singer switched from fiddle base to rectangular base in 1892, keeping the long black cast iron rear cover (VSII). At some point the casting was changed to have the familiar round back cover plate of the 27. Do you or anyone else know when that change was made ?

As best we can tell by the pic and serial #; 10,952,099, it's a 27 with the painted roses decals made in 1892. We haven't ID'd the cabinet yet.
It also looks to be missing the top tension assembly.

Are we close or did we miss it by a city block?

The poster of the machine wants to sell it but I suspect she'll be asking waaayyyy too much.

Joe, here is a picture of one that I purchased for $40. It isn't exactly like this one of pretty close. It has a date of 1887

if you look at my "Daisy" thread, you will see the machine that this changed from. I have the 1892 fiddlebase "Painted Roses" version. The cabinet is the same except mine has two drawers per side.

I’m not Joe, but in answer to your question, you may be looking at multiple timelines, depending on where the model 27 was made. The USA machines had round rear inspection plates as early as 1900 (maybe 1896, but I don’t know which factory made serial number 13804165). But, I have a 27K2 made in the UK in 1901 that has the kidney rear inspection cover.

As I have said, we are not going for that machine. We did some research to help the seller ID it better. We have only the one pic to go buy so there it is.

There is no way for us to know weather it has the round inspection plate or the kidney shaped one since there is no pic of the back.

All in all it would be an interesting machine to go for, ..... IF:
A> We had some disposable money
B> It was closer
C> I had some room to work
D> I wasn't in such chronic pain from this shoulder
E> I had some room to store them in
F> I had some room to sew in
G> All of the above

Joe, your bold text caught my attention.

Surely you’re not scolding me for joining in on a discussion that you brought up and asked for information from the members, are you?

CD,
Absolutely not. I just noticed that many of the posters were assuming I was going to try for the machine even though I never said I was. I just wanted to get some confirmation on my identification but it's kinda gone beyond that I guess.

Seriously I just wanted to make a point that everyone would understand. Guess I over did it.
