Default Mercury found at yard sale

Mercury found at yard sale for $10.00. Is this machine areal clone? Mercury numbered EA480552 is marked Japan and looks a lot like aclone. The wheel shaft is not the size of Singer wheels and Singer needle clampdoes not fit. Where can I find any information on this machine? My limitedinternet skills have not had any success.

It looks like a 99 clone but it is hard to see much. How heavy is that?

I like those lightning bolts on the decals. Neat!

It looks like a 99 to me, too.

Ken,

It's a copy of the early Singer 99.

Not sure were to get parts other than to check all sources.

The key in internet searching is to keep the search words to a minimum. Go to Google and in the search line put in just the words I have in quotation marks "sewing machine badged mercury", then you're off and running. Because my ageing brain is like a grasshopper all over the place and seldom remembering where I landed last, I would either email myself the whole page that comes up, or create a folder named Mercury Sewing Machine, then save to that. You can always go back later and delete what you don't need or rename it.

Thanks for giving me something new to explore.

Is it aluminum? The Bel Air Bantam is an aluminum 99 clone. I'm wondering if this is the same. Either way it was $10 well spent.

Just another thought on that box the Mercury is in. If you go to the website of Zorba The veiled Male , you can see him rebuilding a sewing machine box and covering it with that same snakeskin looking fabric, purchased from a place that sells handles, coverings, hardware for musicians and their gear. From reading on his site, I wonder if this box the Mercury is in is a re-covered one.

A very heavy machine, cast iron. It uses a flat topped bobbin, not a class 66. A needle clamp from a 66 is not large enough to fit and a wheel from a 66 does not fit either. It does look and act just like a 99 and the hook assembly works just like a 99.
