Lead Dust?
I have seen newer machines with the same powdery coating. We thought it was mold. My 301 as covered with it. I cleaned it of with Windex If you want to be cautious, then Use a plastic sandwich bag over your hand then turn it inside out and discard it in the trash. No dust and no debris. You made a wonderful find. Good job. Donna

The white stuff on the 301 was most likely mold. Lead oxide does not form on anything but lead. I have seen mold on rubber insulation, metal surfaces, plastic and especially the wooden machine cases.

My Featherweight case had a very strong odor when I got it, although other than that it is in great shape. I tried several things including sunning it. Finally I placed several pieces of charcoal in a mesh bag and I think wadded up newspaper all inside and closed it up. Left that for several days and the smell was mainly gone.
