I am so happy for you. I also have one from that same set of serial numbers. Ours are just over 2,000 apart in numbers. Featherweights are great little machines. What are you going to name her?

the belt doesn't grab enough to turn the needle. it will spin the bobbin winder though . . . Not going to ask her to come on anymore, until I have oiled and greased her! =))

Have you adjusted the belt? It should be just tight enough that it doesn't slip. The little featherweights have tiny motors, so they don't like the extra strain of a tighter belt. It takes a little experimenting to get it right.
I haven't seen you mention a manual, you'll find tons of information in it, you can download one from here:

That stuff where the cushion is, uh,.. well it IS the cushion. Sometimes they harden and crack, sometimes they turn to goo and look like someone schmushed bubblegum on it. Sometimes it hardens again after that. In the center of that mess, there will be a screw. You'll need to gently excavate that, and the rest of the cushion can be removed by chipping it off and out.

oh my goodness!! I never would have guessed that *that* was the cushion!! wow!! and thank you SO much for the link to the manual!! I am such a doofus today . . . ran down the street to use Scott's work's wireless. Got carried away, let the battery die on the laptop. ALL of those pre-loaded pages, schwick. =//.

Yeah, it's amazing what happens to those cushions. I think that oil contributes to the "goo" stage.
That Ismacs site is amazing. The number of manuals they've managed to collect and archive in one place is such an incredible contribution to the sewing community. Interestingly, there are a couple of different versions of the 221 manual. Some have more detail than others about maintenance, so download all that you can find and compare them. You can learn a ton from them.
I've done that.
I make sure now that my laptops go into sleep mode when the battery is close to dead. You can find that in Control Panel - Power Options.
