I grew up on these machines and am now looking for a good used one. Does anyone know when Singer started to use acrylic/plastic for some of the gears (maybe which Touch & Sew model# was the first one to have these gears)? I don't want to make the mistake of buying one online that might have these gears. I want one with only metal workings.

Check the ISMACS.net database for Singer models. It might tell you when the last of the metal gears were. I think it was in the 601-603 ish range but I could be off.

Mine is a Golden Touch & Sew circa 1969. Several years ago all the plastic gears had to be replaced.

I have a Singer 600 - its sitting in the garage waiting for Good Will. I just can't get it to sew more than 6-7 stitches without the bobbin popping up out of place. I've tried more than a couple times to fix it and I've just given up! I wanted it for the chain stitch ability, but I just can't get it to do a regular stitch to even be able to try out the chain stitch.

Does your bobbin case have that little arm thing that folds down to secure the bobbin?

Ok, I brought it in to take the pictures, oiled it up again and gave it one last chance. For some unknown reason, it has decided to behave and sew! It's a 603 and not a 600 like I had thought, still have the chain stitch thingy. So, it gets a reprieve and back to the sewing room it goes along with all it's attachments. I still have a box of the the funny flat (non-hat shaped ) cams left - not sure which machine they go to.

There were 300-series machines, along with some others, that took flat cams. I didn't find them to be very humorous, though.
