I have a Viking 6010 and the grease DOES start to harden after about 6mos to a year of inactivity. You can take it apart and remove (and re-grease) but we just put it out in the sun for a few hours and then gave it a whirl, loosened right up, sews great again.

I have a Viking 6020, got it for $5 after someone left it at the thriftshop door with a note "needs work". I pointed out the cracked internal cam (common issue) through the back and was happy to take it off their hands. The is a OSMG Viking Tech about an hour from me and I had previously had him overhaul a 6440 so I knew this one could purr again. My SIL has the 6440 and I kept the 6020 - I love the low gear it has (pull out the bobbin winder). My husband uses this one to sew his clothes and gear for rondevous (black powder shooting reenactment) because it is tough. I hope you got the manual and attachments. Mine only had the the foot control, manual, standard foot and "A" cam, but I was able to replace the rest from an estate sale find and ebay.
Also, There is a yahoo group that can give you lots of information called "vikingsewingmachinespre1980", they also have a list of trusted Viking techs there. That is how I found mine. Congratulations on getting a great machine!

I was very lucky that the manual and all the parts came with it. It is currently being gone over by a repair man. He was very pleased when I walked in with it because it was in good shape and because I just visit his shop and ask questions about sewing machines.
I am sure the machine is probably done but he keep odd hours and the last two times I have visited he has been closed.
By the advice I think I will join the vintage viking group Before I do anything to mess it up.
Glad to know I am not the only machine collector. Your making me think that maybe I need to get them out of the attic and use them once in a while so they don't freeze up.
You gals are very helpful, thank you and yup some of you even make me giggle a bit.

I have a Viking 6010. I am the original owner and it is still my primary machine. I think I have only had it to the shop maybe 5 or 6 times. The last time was because it would only go backwards. One of the few plastic parts had finally snapped due to fatigue. Even if you use your machine regularly, make sure you use all the functions such as the buttonhole dial. They can freeze up by themselves. My backups are a Singer 15-90 and a FW. The only machine I have any desire for is a treadle to keep at our house in the mountains. That is where my FW is at the moment.
