I haven't been on this forum before and hope someone can tell me what's what. Yesterday in a thrift shop I saw a smallish old black with gold trim Singer, metal, electric, in apparently good shape, with small table. A small plate had "AM 825674" (I'm guessing it's the individual machine's #), and another smaller plate simply said "66-" (the model #?).

Is the machine recognizable by these numbers? If so, any comments? The price was $30. I don't need an old machine, but then again...

The 66- indicates it's a Model 66.
The serial number does not match up with the numbers in the ISMACS chart. The numbers that match yours says it's a Mdl 251.
It could be that Singer produced your machine and just numbed it in the series of numbers they were using.

The Singer site says it was made in 1957.

If it has a vertical lever on the pillar to regulate the stitch length it's probably a 66-16. That's a good machine and the price is good too.

Sometimes the serial number is hard to read too, a number not stamped quite deeply enough can look like another one. My 222 may have a 5 or a 6 in its serial number. Depends on who you talk to.

Singer was known to stop production of a model to produce one or two machines of a different model, but they didn't change the registry for the serial numbers...
My 115 is like that...if you look up the serial number, it reports back to a model 27 made in 1911, but the mass 115 production didn't actually start until 1912. One of the experts on Needlebar tells me that they don't know of an earlier serial number on a 115, and they've been "collecting" serial numbers for 30 years. They also told me that the numbers before and after mine ARE model 27s...

At $30.00 I would nab it up what the heck you can always resale but at that price go for it girl if you can. But then again I just love sewing machines and if it looks good and the price is good and the table comes with it and it's tiny oh man where did you say this was I am probably toooooooooooooo far away. Hope you get it.
