Not sure if this machine is old enough to talk about in this section -
I retrieved it from my daughter last week. She hadn't used it in over ten years (I did leave a Singer 237 for her to have SOMETHING to sew on)
It still runs like a champ. I darned socks with it (yes, there are people that actually still do that!) and darned the holes where the buttons pulled off a couple of pockets.
I am still in love with that Bernina 530-2 from 1962!
Can't figure out how to oil the spots it should be on top - the instruction book - such as it is - shows where it should be oiled - but doesn't say how to get the 'lid' off.
I hope I can help you. I haved a 730 record and bought an 830 record for my daughter. If you look on the back of the machine you might see hinges back there which will indicate the top flips back. My experience on two old Bernina's is that the closing mechanism thingy gets sticky and is very hard to open. On one machine I remember I had to really use my muscles to lift the front edge of the cover. Once I had it opened up I used sewing machine oil on that little brass ball that works as the closing latch. I think on the 830 you first need to swing out the panel that sits on the left and covers the presser foot bar and needle bar; once that is opened the top can be opened. I know nothing about the 530 but I suspect that it has the same ball type latch that is just stuck from age. (I've heard of people ruining the 830 by using crow bars because they didn't realize that the left panel needs opened too! I did not have to use any tools to open the two stuck machines I ran into - just lots of muscle and finger strength!)
I'm able to swing out the panel on the left that covers the needle bar - the light bulb is in that panel.

There should be a lever/spring thingy that you push up to open the lid, you can see it when you open the side door.
Got the top off - and I think I oiled what should be oiled - doesn't look like I should put oil on the gears or the pattern selection section.
It says to oil the bearings that in the motor housing. On the red spots. But I've been looking and I'm not seeing any red dots.
