301 Bobbin Problem
 

I was in Racine Wisconsin visiting my sister this last week. We went to the Habitat For Humanity Restore facility and I was asking the gentleman there if he had any sewing machines. He said he did if I wanted to fix it up. I said can I see it and he showed me a 301A. He said he was getting ready to trash it but when he found out I was interested he sold it to me for $10. I have been tinkering with it and I don't think there is too much wrong with it. It doesn't have a bobbin case and it appears there is quite a bit of threads or debris of some kind behind the part that holds the case. Now my question is, can this part be taken off or how do I get in the back of it to get this stuff out. You can see by the picture there is a thread dangling also.

Yes, you can take the "hook" area out and clean it. Note that there is a "finger" on it pointing up and into the slot. You will need to get it back into that same position when reinserting it.

Take the two screws out of the needleplate and the bobbin holder will pop out. Just be careful to line the top finger into the notch in the plate when you put it back together. sew-classic should have a bobbin case and also has a free download of a manual with better directions on removing the bobbin holder. Good oiling and greasing directions, too. This one needs grease. It looks like you need part of the bobbin winder, too. I think some members here have some donor machines.

It will be a great machine to sew on when you get it together.

#1) Remove screws from needle plate, 2) It may help to remove feed dogs, for me I leave them in, but there are two screws on the hook assembly shaft. Remove the two screws. 3)Pull hook out 4)Clean bobbin case assembly you may need to disassemble it if there are threads stuck that won't come out. You can remove the screws on the assembly if you need to do this. Put the hook back on carefully-hopefully you won't move the shaft and look for previous screw marks to line up the holes. You may have to adjust this to get it back in time correctly. I've done this many times. Good luck.

You will need to buy a bobbin case. Expect to pay around $50 for that.
