Nope, didn't do anything so far to remove the sewing hook shaft. Yesterday was yardwork day, lot's of it.

Jingle. I am not giving up on this machine. The Beast still has lot's of life in him according to the OSMG. The motor and wiring are good.

I don't think the shaft is threaded. By reading the instructions it states "When placing the new shaft in position, see that the flat portion near one end of the shaft is at the right so that one the set screws in the gear (Y, Fig. 23) will bear against it when the gear is fastened in position on the shaft." If all else fails, such as getting out and straightened, I am know that a machinist can make one. Might not be cheap but I do really want to get this old guy running again.

I too have purchased a very old 96-10 that seems to have life left in her (mine's clearly a her as she's being quite obstinate!). I've managed to get a few things done, but the machine won't feed fabric correctly even though the feed dogs do move. So I'm guessing it might be a timing problem. I don't have an OSMG anywhere near where I live so it's been all on me to figure this out. Was just glad to see another home sewer trying to save a 96-10. Would love to hear about what your have learned. Brenda

No Brenda. It is still in status quo. There have been so many other projects to work on. My DD has the sewing machine at her home. Perhaps sometime soon we can work on removing the shaft and get it straightened. Do you have the 96-10 maintenance manual? It is available as a PDF download at this link

These old industrial machines were "rode hard and put away wet" so it is a challenge to get them running again. I am lucky that I have a very good OSMG that diagnosed the problem with my 96-10. Good luck with yours.

You might notice that the last post before yours was 7 years ago. Many members come and go and we don't do industrial machines very much.

The only place I know to buy old parts for anything is eBay. My husband finds lots of odd parts for our vintage cars on eBay. Usually they are really cheap.
