Best foot for piecing on an Old Singer?
 

I remember when I purchased my first old singer 1910, electric Red Eye, I was so excited. That was July this year, and one of you warned me, " be careful this is addicting." Well now 10 machines later....
I have been using a1/4" low shank foot I have picked up with the edge piece on to help keep in place.

Its OK, but when you are going over lumps of seams it doesn't always sew straight.

My sister has a FW and she was saying yesterday that her feeddogs weren't feeding very good, and the fabric wasn't moving as well. (Lucky dog! it is a White one with the green box, our mom got it at a rummage sale for $15, and when mom passed away she got the FW)

So is this a foot issue also? Let me know what you use for piecing.

I have two featherweights and take care of about 6 more. For piecing, I always recommend the foot you described and the piecing foot that came with the machine, depending on whether I am sewing on the edge of the piece or not. I find that if my seams are pressed well, I don't have many problems going over them with the guide foot. As for your sister's feed dog issue, has she removed the needle plate and cleaned the feed dogs? They are much less effective if there is a lot of buildup in the grooves. An old toothbrush is great for cleaning them out. Have fun!

It's probably not a foot issue, but rather a foot pressure issue. If your seams are veering you need to play with the foot pressure a bit. You may need more or less pressure, probably more. I use 1/4" feet on all my vintage machines with no problems. I agree your sister may just have junk in her feed dogs. And it may need some cleaning and or oiling.

I was using a 1/4" foot, but have switched to a screw on guide. It seems to be more accurate for me. I think I like the improved visibilty.

I have a FW and need to purchase a 1/4" foot. I have seen the one with the built in guide, but am wondering if there is a clear one -- 1/4" both sides. I got a clear one for my Janome and wish I could find one for my FW.

I'm with Irishrose on this one. I use a standard foot with a seam guide attached to the bed of the machine. Take a look at my video:-

You might also open up the needle plate and clean around the feed dogs. They can become impacted with lint and literally stop moving.

I was able to get a clear 1/4" foot for my FW from my local sewing machine repair man. It was a generic brand. I know this probably doesn't help you since I live in Canada, but just so you know, they do exist.

There are several types of clear 1/4" feet available. You just have to look around at the sewing machine shops and online. You'll find one.
