Buttonholes

I have been sewing all sorts of things lately, aprons, dish towel which hang on the stove etc. I have to say, it is SO fun to make buttonholes with that neat singer contraption. So easy, just attach and go. Love love love it.

That "contraption" is the only method I used as a teenager and for years beyond. Once I got a zigzag machine and had to control the length of the buttonhole myself, it wasn't as easy. Plus, the ones made by the buttonhole attachment look a lot neater.

Daylesewblessed,

You can use the Singer or Greist button hole attachments on machines with built in button holler settings. Just make sure it's the right attachment, bolt it on and go.

Joe,
Once I left home many decades ago, the buttonholer stayed with Mom. Now that I have a few vintage machines, I have picked up some buttonholers, as well as other attachments. I need to see if I still know how to operate them. Ha!

Dayle,

Those vintage button hollers are so simple my mom could use them and she's been gone 12 years now.

I have a collection of them and there are a bunch of different variations. Lots of fun to collect things that actually work like they are supposed to.

I use an old black Singer buttonholer on my Janome 6500 all the time as it makes superior buttonholes. The built in one on my machine will not handle larger or thicker buttons and I need that size for the bags I make.

Ahhh mazin
That old buttonholer i had made perfect buttonholes...consistantly. on these new fangled machines, one would think they made perfect holes, not so.
Ohhhh, the good old days.

You know I have never tried to use one of my vintage buttonhole gadgets! You guys have inspired me to get one out and try it! I need to put a buttonhole in a pair of jeans my granddaughter wants fixed! She ripped the zipper - a 4" zipper in a pair of those low jeans. I can't find a new 4" zipper to replace the old one so my idea is to put one buttonhole/button in that spot.

It's very easy. I had no idea how to use it....this video, dispite the burriness is what I used.....http://youtu.be/RGJD4VYVU08

I am going to make a sample piece on cotton with each template, so when I have a button, I'll know which one to use as the video suggested.
Good luck!

2 Attachment(s)
Ok you guys, this is so cool! I got out a couple of my buttonhole attachments last night. The first one I tried would not work on my 15-88 treadle/handcrank. I thought that was weird so I tried a second one. They looked exactly the same except for the case they were stored in being two different colors. Comparing the 2 buttonhole attachments I could easily see the first one was actually a slant attachment! So on to the 2nd buttonhole attachment. It went right on the Singer 15-88 with a little adjusting to the thread cutter. Following the instruction booklet - luckily I have an instruction booklet - I did a practice buttonhole using only the hand crank on the machine. Wow was I blown away! What a great job that little gizmo did! So on to the jeans! I put in a buttonhole going around it twice using only the HC. How cool is that! I don't think I will ever go back to trying to put a buttonhole in again with one of my expensive 'new' machines!

Those jeans are a size 1 for my granddaughter, and the place where a zipper use to be is only 2.5"s! One button is perfect, and of course my Singer 15-88 HC/Treadle doesn't care how thick the fabric is!
