Can I use metallic thread?
 

My old beloved Bernina is still waiting to go to the repair shop, but my trusty Singer 301 sews on with nary a problem.

I have a Christmas panel that I would like to finish (make) and it takes some gold metallic thread. Can I sew this on my 301? Can I use an embroidery needle?

Opinions? Suggestions?

Give it a try. My machine has no problem with it, but some do.

I feel if it works good. To me, theres no rules in quilting.

When I use my vintage singer I use embroidery thread for mettalic . They don't make special needles for my machine with the larger eye. I just have to go slower. Do some experimenting on a small sample sandwich.

Use a metallic or a topstitch needle. The eye is larger and is made to accomodate metallic threads. You will have to use smooth bobbin thread (poly like Bottom Line) and lower your tension. Also, go sloooow.

I have a Janome that had problems with gold thread but it's possible I had an old spool that wasn't in the best of shape. If you have scraps, I'd do a little practice run before working on a good project. Good Luck with it. =)

I haven't had trouble with my Janome Horizon, but the topstitch needle suggestion by Candace is good caution against fraying. Old needles with a lot of time could be sharp edged also. Perhaps a heavier ga. needle would sufice. The idea of practicing on scraps is good.

I use metallic thread in my Singer 301 with no problems. If you have any, sew slower and use a thread conditioner. I don't remember the name of it offhand, sorry. Also, all metallics are not created equal. I like Superior threads.
