Christmas Gift: Singer Featherweight 221 - need accessories

1 Attachment(s)
My dear husband gifted me with this lovely jewel. Unfortunately, it did not come with accessories. At a minimum, I need bobbins. Anyone got an extra bobbin?

It's a beauty!

Hancocks sells bobbins for the Featherweight, and you can use a coupon.

harrishs 12-25-2012 11:45 AM

what a beautiful gift!

Try Sew Classic online.

Bobbins are very easy to find. Hancock's or online - just type in FW bobbins. I usually buy 10 or 12 at a time.

Sweet....hope you enjoy many years together! I've always bought "vintage" bobbins, sometimes on ebay or from businesses that do the repaint/restores. I've gotten some from Keelers at $1.39 each. I just checked and they are out of stock.

They do have "new" one tho for .50 each.

What a beautiful machine! It will use any low shank attachment. Either go to www.sew-classic.com or Ebay and look for low shank attachments. Don't be a sucker for low shank attachments listed specifically for the Featherweight with a jacked up price to go along with them. Short Shank is Short Shank. If you want to stick with vintage singer parts that is OK just don't pay for the Featherweight hype some sellers try to pull.

One attachment you might want to get is a vintage button holer. The featherweight uses the one in the green oblong square box not the green egg shaped box.

The buttonholer in the green egg shaped box will also work on a Featherweight. It's just that the older style in the darker green rectangular box is black and will "match" your Featherweight better. The buttonholer in the egg shaped box was updated and is a light beige/tan colour. The buttonholers that won't fit a Featherweight are the ones in the maroon or dark rose cases as those models were made for slant needle machines (think Singer 301). Those vintage buttonholers in the dark green cases will fit any short shank machine and work very well on my 201 Singer and even my much newer Janome 6500 (don't like the programmed buttonholes on this machine) and I use my faithful old Singer buttonholer which is older than I am all the time.

What a fabulous gift! Enjoy!

Thank you everyone for the advice and links! Plugged her in; she runs like a clear river. Bulb as bright as the day she was born.

DanofNJ 12-25-2012 07:25 PM

That is the best gift...and a beauty....enjoy. Accessories are easy to get for the machine and low priced. Just check ebay...

Congratulations! Your FW looks gorgeous!

callen 12-26-2012 05:53 AM

Wow, she's perfect & sooooooo beautiful !

MimiBug123 12-26-2012 09:58 AM

I don't think my DH knows what a FW is or that I have one. Yours is a beauty and looks to be in mint condition. Great gift and I hope you enjoy her.

Mariposa 12-26-2012 11:59 AM

Such a pretty gift! Neat that hubby found one in such great shape! Does she have a name yet-? :)

KyKaren1949 12-26-2012 12:32 PM

Sometimes you can get the entire box of attachments on ebay and for good prices too!

Debbie C 12-27-2012 05:01 AM

She's beautiful! Wishing you many millions of stitches with her!

Runs like a clear river....love it! I think I've purchased extra bobbins at J's. On the label it would say for FW machines. Easy to locate bobbins and needles. But remember to thread from the inside out.

oldtnquiltinglady 12-27-2012 09:43 AM

That is one beautiful FW--I have several, and it is prettier than any of them except for one that was given to me in the 80s by someone who didn't realize what that gift was. Nothing beats a FW for piecing a quilt.....so handy, so small, and so quiet......Love, love, love all of mine.

jillaine 12-27-2012 02:28 PM

Oooh... what does this mean:

"remember to thread from the inside out."

Oh, and I forgot to tell the story. This FW (no, we haven't named her yet) was a wedding gift to a woman who never learned how to sew. It spent the last 60+ years in an attic. Hardly/ever used.

All it means is when you thread your needle you thread it right to left - inside the harp toward the outside. Featherweight needles go in side ways unlike today's machines with front facing needles.

I too got a 221 in excellent condition - looks like it has never been used other then a meldew smell in the carrying case. Mine even has the original manual but you can replace that on e-bay. The attachments are the foot hemmer, adjustable hemmer, multiple slotted binder, an attachment for piping & one to bind outside curves, adding french folds , an edge stitcher & one for shirring & lets not forget the ruffler. Wow! Good luck w/ yours, I plan on using mine at classes.

I lost the QB name of the person who offered to send me some accessories. I want to thank her (?). I came home from holiday travels to a package of wonderful accessories for my new Featherweight. How incredibly generous! THank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

lynnie 01-05-2013 07:20 PM

Wow, shespretty. Sorry, no bobbins

TinkerQuilts 01-06-2013 07:18 AM

What a wonderful gift, and appears to be in great condition! My aunt gave me her singer featherweight over 20 years ago, and neither of us knew at that time what a treasure it was. I still thank her for it every Christmas when I see her.
