I was a young girl when I learned to sew. It was on my mothers singer's 401. The machine is gone now I don't know what happened to it. I was wondering if you can quilt on one of those machines. How many inches between the needle and the body? If anyone knows I would appreciate it. If someone knows please pm me. Thanks.

7 1/4" throat space. I have a 401 and I love sewing and quilting with it.

If you are buying one try the 403 - more stitch width control than the 401 - I love both of mine.

Thank you I will keep that in mind. I do appreciate your input. I'm really not sure at this point. I have a janome and it does sew very well. :):):)

The old Singer 403 will sew rings around the new Janome. I sold my Janome and use the 403.
