Featherweight- I bought one!

Eek I cant believe I did it. I've been so excited about this for over a week waiting for this yard sale to begin that I'm not sure I got a good deal. I wont be shopping for a little while. The number on the bottom is AD543738. I dont have a way to post pictures. Anyway she's an earlier model with some wear to her finish. She needs a new wire from plug to plug (looks like something gnawed on it in one spot of the wire casing ick) The box is worn on the corners. It came with 1950 original book I'm guessing someone added it at a later date. But she is so cute!! How could resist? I think I'm officially a sewing machine addict!

Looks like it was commissioned in October 1938- an early FW. You love it, so it's worth whatever you paid. More knowledgeable folks can help you about wiring and cleaning. Congratulations, and enjoy.

Thank you Monroe. The Singer website said it is from 1933.

Wonderful! That would be 1938. I had a Featherweight with the serial number AD. I sold it several years ago, it was a great machine. I'm thrilled for you!!!

I am glad for you. They are so much fun to sew on-----being a sewing machine addict isn't a terrible thing----I like being one!

Ad543738 is a 33 on both the singer ans ismacs site. I think it might even be the very first run of them? I didn't see an earlier one in my quick glance. What does the badly look like? I so wish you could post a picture. Is the bobbin tensioner on the bottom front? Is there anything in the lid of the case or is it lines with corduroy? What color is the tray?

WOW!!!! You did get an early one!! There were 10,000 made in 1933, and it is the first run of the featherweight machines. The serial numbers for them were given out Oct. 3, 1933. At her age, she is allowed to show some wear. I found the date on http://www.thefeatherweight221factory.com/page5.php

What are you going to name her? I'm sure you will be very happy with her, and if you aren't you can just box her up and send her to me!! :) :) :)

LOL - Congratulations on your new Featherweight. The last garage sale that my husband and I went to where I purchased a machine cost him $8,000! We were at a moving sale for a quilter and she was selling her Gammill - I now own it.

I bought my first Featherweight from a lady in Southern California and my second one I picked up at a local garage sale - the lady was asking $125 for it and I didn't even check to see if it worked - the machine looked fine and the case was in good shape - I gave her the money, took the machine and RAN! lol
