Featherweight Penguin foot Users - getting skipped stitches
After several years of looking for a penguin walking foot for my FWs I finally found one I could afford. I have a mini retreat on Monday and decided to "quilt" rather than piece so I put the foot on my FW and now have intermittent skipped stitches. I took the foot off, put the normal foot back on, no issues and I've run it full speed. Put the penguin back on.....again, intermittent skipped stitches no matter how slow or fast I go.
I have a few other FWs so I pulled out a bit newer one. I tested the machine without the penguin at all speeds, no skipped stitches. Put on the penguin, two passes, no problem, then on the third pass.....skipped stitches. Anyone have any ideas what needs tweaking? or is the penguin bad? I didn't get the instructions with this when I bought it and I've googled today to find any online and can't seem to find any. HELP! TYIA Diane |
I don't have a penguin foot (too spendy) but most mechanical attachments need maintenance. Have you tried oiling it?

I've never heard of a Penguin foot for sewing machines. Could you post a picture, or show me where you found one? Thank you.

That's a cute little walking foot. I want one. :)

Well, Joe, I hope you have $300-400 to blow...
Diane, I would examine the penguin to see if it has any threads or bits of fluff stuck in it, and then oil anything that moves on it. Such a shame if you can't get it to work! I've been coveting one of these myself, but I'm not willing to spend quite that much. |
Here's a link with a lot of info on the foot.
http://www.april1930s.com/html/walking_foot_160741.html I took a break from trying the foot and went to buy some fabric....will try oiling all the bits that move and see what happens. |
Wow, never saw this before! I love the little two-foot walking action. Would hate to spend as much on the foot as I did on the machine! Hope you can solve your problems.

just found an instruction book online. In case anyone else needs this, here's the link. On the last page it talks about oiling points and a lubricant for the cam. I'll follow these directions and hope it works. I'm also going to check for burs with a nylon.

I oiled and lubricated the foot, checked for any snags on the cute little toes and found nothing. Put it back on the machine and ran it without thread to get the oil/lubricant spread around. Put in the thread and it sewed beautifully. Then I put in my little purse to stitch and back to skipping....... :(
I had a new needle in both the machines I've tried the foot on. Wonder if I should try a higher number? Maybe there is some deflection going on? I really want this baby to work. |
Bummer! I don't have any great ideas but I just want you to know that I sympathize with you. I sure hope it gets working the way you need it to.

Is it possible your thread cutting piece is inhibiting the arm (cam) of the walking foot? I had to remove my thread cutter on my Featherweight when using my original (Penguin) walking foot.

The first machine didn't have a thread cutter. The second one did and I had to remove it to mount the foot. I did change the needle from a 14 to a 16. That seemed to help. So it must be needle deflection. The tension looks good but may try to loosen it a bit tomorrow. Think I'm at 2 now. I still have an occasional skip, much improved from the 14 needle. |
Wow that's a lot for a foot. Hope you figure it out.

It is soooooo cute.
I would love one, but when it costs more than the machine, I DON'T THINK SO. |
I would love to have one too!! They are so cute, but a bit rich for me. But I do have 2 Singer Pinkers :) which work great on the FWs. I didn't pay April's price for them either. She has some high priced things on her site.
