help Identify this singer
 

Here is a singer that I bought at an estate sale. I know that it is a 15 but other than that I do not know. Any help on this machine is very appreciated. I thouggt it might be a 15-88 but not sure. thanks alissa

Hi, very nice sewing machine :D.....Looks like a 201-2 however, you can go online to Singer.com, then click serial numbers. Look on the front right side of your sewing machine for the letter(s) and numbers of your sewing machine serial number and this will let you know what year it was manufactured. You can then call Singer Consumer Affairs at 1-800-474-6437 (from USA). Another way to obtain info., would be to go on Ebay, enter Singer sewing machines and a great list with pictures will appear (you may find one just like yours). Hope this helps you.

Serial dates it to October 17, 1939. Model 15 (don't know the specific series) with 25,000 serial numbers allotted then. Very nice looking machine, I'd love to have one of those to treadle since I really enjoy my 15-91.

It is definately a Mdl 15. One of 25,000 allotted on 10-17-39. I can't say for sure what dash number it is, but it is a Mdl 15.

The 201s have the tensioner on the front like the 66s and 99s. The Model 15s have the tensioner on the rear side of the face plate. It's the only machine Singer made with the tension in that position.

They are very similar but not the same.

It looks to me like it’s a 15-88.

The spoke wheel and the stitch length lever are good -88 indicators (although the spoke wheel can be a replacement). Most of the 15-88 machines that I’ve seen from the 30s had painted hand wheel rims instead of the chrome rims, but some later 15-88 machines had the chrome-rimmed wheels. I’m not sure when they changed.

I think it's a 15-90 because of the belt on the handwheel, these machines are easy to distinguish because of the face plate/nose plate and the potted motor on the backside.
I have a 15-91 with no belt so I don't have to worry on belts being worn down.
You don't have to mess with the tension too much with these machines, they make an awesome perfect stitch, weighs quite heavy it's best to have it in a cabinet or one of those carrying plastic compartments that sell at WalMart; but you can still sew using them just the way it's on your photo.
I ordered a cabinet specifically for my machine from Ebay.

I have this 15 machine mine was born in 1947, I just Treadled her today will post pictures when she is all belted up and ready to sew. Dottie

This is definitely a 15 model, manufactured in 1939. The this was the only model on which Singer placed the tension on the face plate area. If all of the machine parts (minus the motor) are original then the following applies. As to the specific type of 15 it is most likely a 15-88 treadle that was later converted to electric. The 15-88 was a treadle only model and came with a spoked wheel. The 15-88 was a hand crank machine and came with a spoked wheel. The 15-90 was electric and came with a solid wheel. Interesting to note, though, that the 88, 89 and 90 are the exact same machine built alike with the only difference being how the machine is powered.
