Last night I got my new Singer all cleaned up, got the tension set on some test fabric... and then decided to change the needle and "really sew". It all went to heck... I noticed the needle I took off said "Singer", and I just used some quilting needles to replace. I couldnt get it to stitch... then I put the old needle back, and it still wouldnt stitch. Ugh. I did rethread the top... but not the bobbin (of course, now that I am not at home I think, why didnt I do that). But... is there something else I should be doing? What about needles... is there special needles for a 401??

Not sure about the 401's but try reversing the needle and then making sure it's threaded properly thru the needle try it both ways to see, if you don't have the manual...I've also heard the older Singers only like Singer needles, but I don't know that from personal experience!

I downloaded one... and it has threading instructions, but no troubleshooting.

Do you put the flat side of the needle towards you or away from you?

That might be your problem. In a Featherweight the flat side is on the left, and you thread from right to left. (at least I think that's the way I do it - if it isn't, please will someone jump in here and correct me?)

I have the 401A. I use all kinds of needles, The flat side to the back or feel for the groove that runs down the front of the needle goes to the front. I thread from the front to the back.

That may be my problem then... I have been putting the flat side to the front. I will try it tonight and see what happens. :)

The flat side of the needle needs to go away from you on the back side. The curved part needs to be to the front. The 401 doesn't require anything special. I would also suggest keeping with a metal bobbin.
