Help - Problem with newly purchased 301
 

Hi All,

I hope someone has a suggestion for me. I just received a 301 that I purchased from Ebay. She's in good shape and
seems to sew OK, but I need to clean her up. I am unable to remove the back screw in the throat plate. Its like its really stuck there, welded almost. I've tried many different lengths of screwdrivers (including the real stubby ones), but neither me nor my husband is able to get the screw to move. Does anyone have any suggestions that might help?

Hello, Best Wishes on your 'new' 301. For future reference, you might find it helpful to keep CLP(cleaner,lubricant,preservative) or Kroil on hand. Both are displacement agents and seep into rusty areas to eventually free them up. I got CLP at Walmart in the rifle area. It was not expensive. Sometimes it needs to be applied and allow to set (a few hours/overnight). Kroil is sometimes found in Cycle shops (pedal). Also, we have some wonderful individuals here on this forum who are extemely verse in machine parts and problems.. Billy (Lostn51) and Miriam are a wealth of knowledge. Hope this helps.. Linkbeth, Thank you for the suggestion, I will look for it on my next trip to Walmart. The 301 is a wonderful machine. I
have several other "new" machines, but the simplicity and sturdiness of the old Singers is wonderful...nothing like classic.

be sure to put the screws back into the 'hole' they came out of.....on my 301A there is a very slight difference between the screws and for them to set flush with the plate they have to be in the correct holes. just FYI

Spray a little CR3 on it. Hubby uses that to loosen stubborn/stuck screws.

Thanks to all who have replied, great suggestions for future reference! Yes, I love the 301, still waiting on a new electronic
foot controller for it, the one that come with it is shot. I'm very happy with it, great shape inside and out after a little elbow grease...amazing how these things sit around in someone's attic for years and years and clean up just fine!
