That is soooo awesome! Can you imagine how quickly one could press yardage??? I WANT ONE! Do you suppose there are any still out there?

Krisb 08-05-2012 06:44 PM

Miele still makes a mangle.

RugosaB 08-05-2012 06:50 PM

Hey Therese, is that like the one Mom had in her basement when we were little?

(post to my reads, but never posts, sister)

Suze9395 08-05-2012 07:01 PM

A friend of mine has one. She bought it from an older lady who was cleaning out her mothers home. It is very cool. I would love to have the space that would allow me to search for one.

Mom3 08-05-2012 08:23 PM

Geez, my Mom had one. VERY hot, lots of steam. It was parked in the kitchen for all its life. The kitchen turned into a sauna when Mom used it.

I remember the day it left the house. I think the junkman was blessed with it........

I still remember using one and just the other day when I was ironing yardage, I wished for one. Anybody seen any recently? I did see a post on CL for one several months ago. Wonder why I didn't check it out. I could really buzz through the ironing "back then" but now all I iron is fabric to sew...no clothing.

Here's one for sale: http://sheboygan.craigslist.org/app/3126354607.html

I have one! Don't have the cover but it works fine. I use it to iron fabric after washing and drying. Haven't used it for awhile and think it needs some oil but I love it! Several years ago I lived in a 4 apt bldg and the lady upstairs had it in the basement and when she went to a nursing home, gave it to me. I had the landlord's son move it to my new apt and it is HEAVY!!! There's an Ironrite site and I got the manual for it. I keep it in the kitchen now, next to the dryer. They do show up on ebay and craigslist and are often $200-300.

Now you went and did it! Expect a long line of quilters standing at your front door tomorrow with armloads of wrinkled 100% cotton waiting to use it!:)

Dreaming of a 46" model .... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

happyquiltmom 08-06-2012 03:31 PM

I'll have to keep my eyes open for one. But, I'll have to make room for it...

I was thinking of getting a mangle the other day although I don't mind ironing, just hard to iron larger yardage on a ironing board even though it has been enlarged with a sheet of wood. Seen a mangle at the St. Vincent dePaul store.
Oh yea, also a Rockateer, had to walk away. Not easy, but small house.

mudose8 08-06-2012 03:48 PM

OK, so is a Ironrite and a mangle the same thing? My mom had a mangle and from looking at the pictures, the mangle was bigger.

My mom worked for a cleaners in the 50's in Chatham, Ontario.
I would go to piano lessons then walk to cleaners. She taught me how
the ladies used it. They use to press 200 white shirts a day with one but I never see one now. Never disliked ironing anyway.

dellareya 08-06-2012 06:40 PM

I learned to iron on one of the old Mangle iron similar to this one only they were a lot bigger. I started out ironing pillowcases and worked my way up to sheets. In those days everything had to be ironed. I remember it took up half of her washroom. When it was in use it would heat up the entire house. I wish I had room for one now. What a dream it would be for ironing fabric.

sunny42539 08-07-2012 06:27 AM

Never heard of this but it would make ironing fabric easier.

I noticed there isn't a home town listed -thats either a smart move or a sneaky one.I was half way out the door with a bolt

crtwelvecats 08-07-2012 06:36 AM

I love the part that says she does the ironing to relax now. LOL not this girl....Ironing isn't one of my favorite things no matter which way but is just one of those things that you need to do quilting.but i can think of better ways to relax

I just posted this in teh wrong thread .

if you want the iron, why not use one of these

My grandmother had one of these, you could actually sit down while you used it. She kept hers on a closed in back porch
great place to iron when it is 20 degrees below zero. Something else that I remember is the sprinkling of dried laundry before you ironed it. Once a week, the refrigerator had rolled up dampened clothes to be ironed. You sprinkle it the night before and ironed the next morning. Something else I remember is that the women at the Methodist church had decorated bottles to put your water in and add a sprinkle top. Once the ladies from the Baptist church discovered that they were made from beer bottles, the gossip swirled in our small town. Many ladies in many churches took second
looks at what they were offering at their fall sales.

Williams Sonoma advertises the Miele ironer. Wish I had a place for one.

Jingle 08-07-2012 07:04 PM

I remember the mangles, never used one. I just use my iron and ironing board. If clothes need to be ironed I donate them. I use to iron five family clothes and took in ironing for extra money. Now I only iron because when making quilts it can't be avoided.

karate lady 08-07-2012 10:26 PM

used one of these as a new bride. have no idea what happened to it.

Bennett 08-08-2012 02:22 PM

Saw one up for auction recently, but I wasn't able to attend. Would have been neat to have if I could spare the room!

(And no one has mentioned the sewing machine yet? ;) 201?)

ThayerRags 08-11-2012 06:55 AM

I bought one at an auction last year. I posted photos of it on the thread http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...e-t130180.html

I haven't ever gotten around to using it yet.

I was guessing a Singer 201 on the sewing machine too.
